This is my latest find, not sure if it will be considered a great one. I have always wanted a cedar hope chest, and I have a friend who goes to auctions every week. She has been keeping an eye out for about 6 months, trying to find one that is in good condition and not more than my planned budget of $200. Last week she called and told me she had bought one for me, its 52 inches long, and 18 inches deep, and has very small casters so it is easy to move. I don't see any name on it, it is plain but does not need any work, and it was only $130. I am very pleased with this find!!

I love cedar stuff. I have my grandmother's cedar hope chest. I have no idea what one is worth.

There was an old cedar chest left in one of the houses we moved into almost 30 years ago……..I still have that!! I haven't a clue what it would be worth but I love it…..it's very old, very heavy, and perfect for at the end of my bed!

I have a huge cedar chest at the foot of my bed. My ex husband bought it for me at an old farm auction before we were married. I'm going to give it to one of my older two boys. Soon as I empty it out.

Cedar chests! Wow!! Got mine many years ago at the Salvation Army. $15. I didn't have any extra money at the time, but knew that it was worth much more than that, so skipped more than a couple of meals and still have the cedar chest.

Now you've got me thinking — wonder where my grandmother's cedar chest went. Maybe to my sister or my brother? I'll have to ask them. (The old mind is going fast!) I'd love to find an old one to use for my quilts.
I do have two chests that were my great-grandmother's. They moved to California in 1969 when the farm in WV was sold, and sat in the garage at my grandmother's house until both she and my uncle passed away. Then they sat in my son's garage until last year when they made the move with me back to WV. I started going through them last winter – other things got in the way, so I haven't finished yet, but maybe on a cold day this winter? One thing I found – every real estate tax receipt on the old family farm in Jackson County going back to 1932. Fascinating! Taxes on a 260 acre farm with a house, two barns and various other buildings were less than $11 per year.

I come from a very large family and there are very few things that made its way to my generation. Several weeks ago my oldest sister called and asked if I wanted one of Grandmama's old dressers. Of course I got in the truck and picked it up before she changed her mind. The dresser has a big round mirror and only 2 large drawers, one of which was broken, and her husband put very large casters on it—-why I can't figure out. But Hubby fixed the drawer and it now is in my bedroom. Grandmama had a lot of beautiful furniture, but almost all of it went to a cousin. My mother's parents died when she was young, so we don't have anything from that side of the family, but her oldest sister showed me a dress that their mother made her when she was a baby, it was all hand stiched and she had it framed in a shadowbox. I cried when I saw it, I don't think my mama even knew it exsisted. This is one of the reasons I don't throw anything away, maybe one day my boys will have children and they will have some of the things that I made to pass to their children. I kept a lot of my sister's hand made crafts, quilts, pillowcases and jewelry for Girlie (her granddaughter that lives with me). She will appreciate these as she gets older. Sorry for the ramble, but the replies about cedar chests got me started.

Jeannie, you sound like me! My mom was an orphan, so there isn't much from her side of the family. But I have alot of stuff from my Dad's side. I have my grandfather's little book that he kept track of all his jobs in. He was a carpenter/farmer. He died in 1962 at age 87, so when most of y'all talk about your great grandparents, that is my grandparents era. My dad went to the same one room school house that his mom went to. I love the old family history and treasures we've been able to keep. Two of my dad's 3 sibling's didn't have children, so I was lucky enough to get some things from them too. I tend not to throw stuff away either, hoping to pass it all down.
I hope you post a picture of your dresser!

I just bought a dining room – from the early 1900's for $475. Table, six chairs, server, buffet, and china cabinet! That is my latest, greatest "find".

My brother recently called me and asked if I wanted my grandfathers desk …. of course I said yes, but we are having problems getting it here. They live in Saskatoon and I live on the island so we are trying different shipping options. They thought they had something that would have had it to me in January but no such luck.
Anyway, this is the desk that my grandfather used in his office when he was a telegraph operator in northern Alberta in the 1910 – 1920 years. It huge and heavy and I have no idea where it will go, but of course I want to have it.
My mom passed when I was 19 and my dad when I was 22, all my grandparents had passed by then too, so I have often felt a bit alone in the world (although I do have 6 siblings), the desk will be nice to have for a memory.

I'm having it refinished right now…and then I have to retrieve it…so when I finally have it in my house, I'll take a picture.
(This was a private estate sale…I knew what I was buying, because I've spent many hours dusting it!)

I have been looking for a cistern or water barral of some kind for rain water for my new garden. Found on craigslist in Austin a 330 gallon for 140.00! Its square plastic in a metal "fence" container and has a spout on the bottom. Soft drink syrup came in it. Calling tomorrow to reserve one! Thats more than half price for a new something!

We also went grocery shopping in a little town 10 miles from here yesterday. There is a little store that gets truckloads of unsellables from Houston. Like dented cans and smashed boxes. We bought bags of cereal for 29 cents. jars of diced tomatoes 50 cts. jar of miracle whip 25 cts. cans of corn 20 cents. We spent 39.00 for an overflowing basket full of food. I also got some flower seed pkts for 5 cents. Its a great place for todays economy!

Georgia, those will make a great cistern! Huge!! You're using those for watering the garden? I need to find something like that, even a couple 55 gal barrells will work……….water is so expensive in this town!
What a grocery store find!! The local grocery store here has an area where they have these type of things at super cheap……it's usually always empty!
