Another idea, Jeannie, that I have heard from several folks who went through chemo is that the nausea is not nearly as bad if they force themselves to eat prior in spite of having no hunger. You might ask the doc if what he is getting responds in this way to having food in his system. Perhaps something as simple as yogurt might help? If I recall, it was food within the hour, but don't quote me on that one. Worth asking about in any case.

Jeannie,
Don't worry about letting off steam…if you didn't you would burst! And your husband needs you. I know this is nothing like what you are going through, but I have a hubby story; this past year, my husband had his first surgery! At the age of thirty two, he underwent knee surgery. Well I was a mess, I walked the halls, looked at the clock that stood still, watched the operating room door, until finally a nurse suggested I visit the giftshop. That was a great idea….a gift! Well, I went down the elevator and boy they had some nice gifts, with nice prices! So, I chose a ten dollar flower, it was a simple yellow rose with a beautiful balloon (small). It thrilled me to buy it! After what seemed like ages, the doctor made an appearance and told me to go ahead and meet him in my husband's room….he had gone through surgery wonderfully and he was able to correct the problem! I was so elated, I hobbled (I can't run because of my leg) with the lonely flower back to his room to wait. When he saw me, he had this look on his face I am not familiar with….it was a scowl. The nurse whispered to me, "It's the anesthetia, it makes patients angry". Well, I give him the flower and he says, "I bet that cost a lot!"….and I felt horrible!
My point here is, and I have one, I built my heart up thinking all that time that the little flower would cheer him up and show him that I cared; but by me just being there, I was showing him how much I loved him. You are a strong lady and your husband is probably scared…even though men never admit those things. You are a blessing to him.

It can take a couple weeks for the anti-depressants to get into the system enough to be affective, Jeannie, just keep up with it!
And this thread is just for you!!!! Vent, cheer, cry, do whatever you need to here, because you definitely can't at home! I'd say you can even kick if you want, but don't kick the computer! That wouldn't be good!

Linda is exactly right here: as one of you stated to me when I first join this lovely group, "No one here but us chickens"…if this is how you cope, then by all means, vent! That is what friends are for! I just wish I would have had a group of people like you when I was going through my "tough time"….I think I can speak for all of the group and say whatever gets you through this dear.

Thanks friends, we had the second chemo Friday, it was a very long day (8:30 to 1:45), but the most amazing thing happened. I hadn't been to the cancer center since my dear sister Linda passed, over 4 years ago. Thile we were there Friday, I grew restless and wandered around. At the back of the center there is a slope, they used to have some bird feeders on the side, but nothing at the back. The infusion floor is below ground level at the back and the entire lenght of the building is windows and the view is wooded with some apts on the other side that you can only see in the winter. When I went over, I looked down and there was the most amazing kio pools and a patio, also there was a boadwalk and a sitting area near the little creek. The water was clear and the koi are very large and colorful, even though they are slow moving this time of year. After I dragged Jimmy to the window, he said I think I see a raccoon. Well it wasn't a raccoon, but 2 little grey foxes, scampering around. What a treat!! This little area can't be seen from the parking lot, or from the other 2 floors of the cancer center, it's like a secret garden, and I plan to visit it up close when the weather warms.

Update—I guess every one is different, Jimmy's cancer and treatment is so different from my Mamas and sisters. They had some bad days, but more good ones. Jimmy feels good one day, then the next couple, he stays in bed. He is still losing weight, but the chemo nurse said that he will level out when the nausea is under control. They gave him a new med, (can't remember the name), but it still doesn't work that well either. We had a beautiful weekend, so he did get out Sunday, but he is so weak, all he can do is sit. He ate some on Sat, but Sunday he only had 1 pancake for breakfast and didn't eat anything else, yesterday, he didn't eat and didn't drink much either. We go back to the Dr Friday, and them another chemo. Maybe, the Dr will have some other ideas.

Suzanne, I have had to deal with cancer in my family several times and I try to keep a positive attitude. Some days it's hard, but I never let him dwell on the downside of this dreadful disease. I won't let him lay in bed all day and I make sure that he has 'things' to do each day when I'm at work. With all the resources the US has, it makes me so mad that cancer has become an epidemic, and that is truly what it is.
