happy-flowerI dont know why I do it, but I do, New Year's resolutions. This year I made 2.

                 #1 NO CHOCOLATE

                 #2 JOIN A GYM

Number 1 lasted for 7 hours, but the second one I kept, I joined a gym this morning! We dont exchange Christmas gifts, so I am doing this for me, at my age , it is for health reasons, mostly, but getting rid of some of the "muffin top" would be really nice. My Doctor will be so happy!  yes

Dh and I are doing a food overhaul, mostly for my sake.  The goal is to reduce wheat and processed sugar intake to two servings a week.  I'm starting with allowing four for a couple of weeks, then down to three, and then ending with two.  I did this a couple of years ago and had great results.  I ended up going back to my old way of eating, but I know the reasons why I did so.  The main reason was that I did not allow myself any of my favorites of processed sugar.  I love jelly beans and Coke!  lol  Compound that with the stress of dh's last surprise deployment and I was a mess when it came to food (and emotions!) this past year.

I won't limit any natural food unless I get stuck in my weight loss.  Then I will limit my trail mix (I really enjoy Kroger's Cranberry Trail Mix) and carbs.  I actually started before New Year's and am already showing a loss.  Also my bp is starting to lower and my bones and joints aren't hurting as much.

I have 3 this year:

1. Finish the &*! books already (I have 3…a kitchen book, a memoir, and of course, a novel) all > 1/2 finished, none actually finished. This was on my 2011 list too.

2. Get rid of 10,060 more things. (No, that is NOT a typo.)

3. Give the party I have been talking about for years.

I should also add: Finish the 2 rugs and the mobile (1 rug & mobile for friends, 1 rug for the house).

Exercise regularly! Good health demands it. Wish there was another way, but there isn't. no

My goal for this year is to get organized.  Our clutter has gotten out of control & it is driving me crazy!  I have a good friend who has the same goal, so we are supporting each other. Here's to a cleaner and de-cluttered 2012!

My goal for the year is to NOT have my major medical kick in. :-) I have had enough of that the last couple of years.

happy-flowerWell, I  have to write this, I cancelled my membership to the gym! That resolution lasted 24 hours! I thought this over and decided, even though the membership was free, that gas to get there and back is not, and many of the machines they offer, I cant use, so after giving t lot of thought and talking with our Doctor, I sent a letter of cancellation. My Doctor is a firm beleiver that watching your diet and good old fashioned walking is better then a gym,  it is in my case anyway, so like some of the other gals, I will take baby steps and not "beat my self up" just one day at a time. yes

Maybe one of you will start a thread where we can list our progress, sort of a support group thread?

I started a "walking" thread JOJO!  I wanted to say something about your gym membership along the lines of 'don't overdo' and not to get yourself so sore you don't want to go back, but I didn't want to be a "Debbie Downer"!  (I hate being called Debbie after all, I'm DEBORAH darn it!)

Anyway, my New Year's Resolution is to APPRECIATE my walks more, since my puppy (nearly grown now but still a pup!) makes my walks a necessity.

I'm going to watch for and notice the small beasties and the scenery, the weather, be it snow or rain or sunshine, and just pay more attention to my world around me.  When it's not this cold, I'll start taking my camera more too! …maybe.  I'm terrible about that, but if I can find the right spot, I want to take a picture of that spot every day, (or nearly so) then compare them all over time and over the seasons.  Digital cameras make that possible, so I'm going to see how that goes too!

I want to appreciate my life.  pawprint

happy-flowerThank you BuckeyeGirl, Debbie, I left a post on your new thread.  When I fiqued the milage and the cost of gas going to and from the gym, and then talking with our doctor, I knew that I could do what I need to do on my own, and you are right, stop when it starts to hurt, not when someone tells  me that I need to stay on a machine for a certain amount of time.

I would love to walk my baby as well, but she has a deformed  leg and her paw get very sore when I tried to walk her. But I agree when you are outside walking you senses become elevate to a different level, and times goes very quickly, and every season brings new  smells and sounds.

Good plan Deborah!  Enjoying the 'little things' make the 'big things' seem not quite so BIG.  JoJo, walking is great…beats the gym environment anyday.  IMHO!

Resolution for me is to stop wasting food.  I live alone and throw out far too much. :(  The fresh stuff that I can't seem to eat fast enough.  I freeze a lot, dehydrate some…and eat repetitvely but it's just not good enough.  I think of hungry people, their children and my money everytime that romaine+ goes into the composter.

GrammieEarth, I'm glad to hear that your leftovers go into the compost and not the trash! Composting begins the cycle of life all over again when you use it to fertilize your garden.

Oops, this is supposed to be about resolutions…I tend to get off track. Anyway, my resolution is to clean my house and try to simplify my life. (Guess that's two.)sun2

Remember, if it rains on your picnic it's also raining on your garden!

Ok, so I secretly made some.  Did not count.  Let's see how many there are when they are written down:

1. Keep carb gram count to 150 per day, with 100 as true goal.  OUCH. I hate this one. I still have 36 chocolate chip cookies.  But, the other chocolate, cake, pie and bite sized bars are all gone.  Two reasons for this:  Great way to lose weight, and no blood sugar spikes. It is easy to limit bread since I am not that crazy about it.  And, if I don't write this down daily, it won't get done.

2. More exercise.  So, volunteering to do the chores is a great way to get outside walking in.

3. More classes.  I signed up for Pest Control at the local college!!  DH just laughed. I will even get a certificate.

4. Less time in stores, more planning before I go.  So, dug out my old coupon notebook and got organized enough there to save $30 at last visit.  That is a good incentive. Here, stores don't double, limits on multiple purchases are tight, and it not possible to be crazy with coupons, but using them helps. Rarely are there any good ones at couponbug or couponsuzy.

5. More house cleaning and throwing away!  Two bags from the closet today, about 60 items in all.  Shoes and boots are next!  Aren't the new fashions ugly?  So there is not much I want to buy.

6.  I resolve not to buy any plant that will not get planted in a reasonable amount of time. That is a hard one for me.  Had to make 3 pots of bulbs to get the last ones in, since I dallied past Thanksgiving and the ground was too hard to dig in.  They will be pretty in the spring on the porch.  Need to top them off with pansies. Hmmmm

I normally do not make resolutions since they are almost immediately broken.  I have instead starting making daily goals for myself.  While I don't always complete the goals at least I am making an attempt to do them. I think the trick will be not to make to many goals for one day.  Time will tell as to how I do.

Grrr! New years resolutions and me do not usually get along, but this year I have to do and be successful.  I am tired of spending parts of Maine winters outside.  I have the right incentive this year also…of course the obvious…but I am starting a new job that gives me more hours on the farm…the first step to my self-sustaining and retirement.  With this also comes a change in income…but for all of the right reasons.  My resolution is to quit smoking like millions of others.  A must DO for me! Wish me luck!

@Birdi, YOU CAN DO IT!  I quit long ago, and I can't imagine ever picking it up again.  Although there are still times when I feel like something's missing.  If you watched Friends, the classic quote about cigarettes from Chandler Bing:  Think of it as the thing that's been missing from your hand.  That's what it felt like sometimes.  :-)  Hang in there, one day at a time.

Speaking of one day at a time!  My goals:

  • Write something every day.  Even this counts!
  • Take a photo every day, even if it's crappy.
  • Make an effort to 'get out there', talk to people, do things (I tend to be a hermit, sometimes!)
  • Discover something new every day.
  • Pursue a passion every day.

Weight loss and eating differently isn't on there.  I give up. I love to bake and cook too much. I had a doctor's appt. today and got weighed.  After a solid month of baking and cooking and experimenting (and of course, eating), I weighed less than I did three months ago.  I will never understand my body metabolism.  So I have quit trying! fork

I love reading about everyone's goals.  Besides being interesting, it's energizing!  Good luck to everyone!

GrammieEarth: I share your food wasting resolution. I've begun to make refridgerator soup on a regular basis. I even include lettuces that are too tired for salad!
