Last night I went outside to fill the bird feeders and put out some peanuts for the blue jays.  I made a hasty retreat back inside when I spotted a large skunk underneath the bird feeder.  He (she?) was mostly white with a black stripe down its back.  I kept glancing out the window to see if it had left so I could go back out and feed the birds but it stayed until after dark.  Needless to say I did not venture out to feed the birds.  Luckily with all the rain we had the day before a lot of the snow melted and birdseed and peanuts were visible.  From now on I'm keeping a sharp look out before I go out the back door.

Hi there VictorianGirl, it is nice to see you back again.

I know what you mean about the skunk, we saw one near the feeders last year, luckily we have not see one since. I miss seeing the deer, but they have been here I guess during the night. I went outside this morning to pick up branches that have been brought down by the wind, and could see places on some of the small trees where they have been rubbing their heads.

Hi Joell, thank you for the lovely welcome.

I live in the city so there's not much of a chance of me seeing any deer so I'm a little envious of all of you who are visited by these beautiful animals.  There is a wooded area in a small public park not far from my home and I was told by a cousin a few years ago she had seen a deer in the park.  During various times of the year I have seen geese, ducks and once a blue heron on the pond.  How I wish I lived in the country!

Out my kitchen window: mud, moss, and dead weeds! Plus the little silvery garden shed. My main vegetable beds lie on the east side of our house, so this time of year when I look out there, all I can think is how I hope the rain doesn't hang around late. Just itching to get out in the soil and start planting.

This morning from the east-facing window next to the wood stove I saw a varied thrush, which we call "Christmas robins" because they usually come down from the Cascades/Olympics in mid-December to overwinter with us. We also call them "stained glass robins." They are thrushes, like robins, but with different coloring.

http://birdweb.org/Birdweb/bird/varied_thrush#

I was happy to see this thrush this morning. We're having a temperate winter, so they don't seem to be coming down this far en masse, as some years. One snowy winter, a few years ago, we had about 20 of them cadging bird seed from our south patio.

I got out in the rain the other day to remove pea, squash, and cuke vines. I let them die back and go brown on the theory that the nitrogen amends the soil. But it rains so much, I'm pretty sure most of that washes away. Also, we always need browns in our compost, we have so much green here. A very good problem to have.

This morning when I looked out of my kitchen window I couldn't believe how beautiful everything looked, it was like the heavens had opened and covered the earth with a heavy dusting of powdered sugar. We had about 4.5 inches of wet snow last night, it was nothing to go out in but so beautiful to look at. The birds are busy at the feeder, having their breakfast, there are 4 bright read cardinals sitting on a fence rail, so pretty against the stark white of the snow. By Friday, it will just be a memory, the temps will be in the 50's and raining, what a winter this has been.

Everything is turning green, the floor of the woods is coming to life with wild flowers popping up everywhere, in the garden the rhubarb is coming up, I planted 5 plants, 3 are coming through, I am hoping to have a nice pie this year from our own rhubarb. I am getting anxious to clean up the flower beds and till the garden. Thank you Spring.

I am watching a Red Shouldered hawk sitting on her nest in the top of the pine tree in front of my house. The recent storms dislodged one egg that fell and broke. She remains with the other egg(s). Daddy comes frequently with tasty tidbits for her. In a stately old pecan tree, a Mexican Black Bellied Whistling Duck has nested in a knot hole about 20 feet up. Soon, she should be pushing, erm, encouraging her babies to take the first jump out of the nest. She has nested there several times. I have only once seen the babies make that first leap of faith.

With all the rains, grass is growing like crazy. Everyone is mowing twice a week to keep it manageable. Green is the color out my window.

I heard a cat's cry just a little bit ago. Rather plaintive sounding, not an alarming noise. I looked out my bedroom windows and saw two kittens, coming through the lattice that surrounds my deck. Momma was calling them. Cute as could be! Charcoal grey, long fur, white paws, tail tip and a bit of white on their faces. I had no idea I had a family of cats under my deck! Usually I have possums that den under there. Ewww, not my favorite creature. The kittens will be fun to watch as they grow. I am guessing they are 6 weeks old or so.

Very exciting this morning, we had at least 6 deer in the orchard eating fruit that the wind has blown down, last year we saw none at all, I am sure they came during the night, but nothing during the day. These creatures are so beautiful and a joy to watch.

Last night, I heard coyotes howling. Looked out the window and saw several coyotes gallivanting around on the golf course next to the house. They played, ran, stopped and sang to the moon for about 10 minutes or so and then went on to other adventures.

I just looked out of our kitchen window in time to see a coyote running down the back of our property, around here they are shot when ever possible, they have been responsible for the loss of small pets and a threat to small children.

This morning I noticed the tops of the trees are starting to turn color--can Fall be just around the corner?

This morning I was making biscuits for breakfast and saw a doe down in the orchard eating apples that are on the ground, what a wonderful day to start the day, When we mow, we try to leave as many apples that we can for the animals.

      HAPPY AUTUMN!!

Looking out of the kitchen it looks like Autumn although it is hotter than norm, but the leaves are changing and starting to fall. The corn in the field seem to change overnight from green to brown and the soybeans are turning yellow. I love the Fall, after this past Summer, I am looking forward to cool mornings and evenings. This year I have vowed to use our fire pit, I think I am the only person I know that has never had a Smore---yes, I know!!!   Sad, but true.

Looking out of the window and watching the rain falling along with some leaves, we have had so much rain the last few days, the ground is "smushy" in a way I am glad to have an excuse not to go outside and work, now I can do more inside "stuff" and not feel guilty.wink

We are having a very windy and rain day here, we have had 2.5 inches of rain since late yesterday and the winds are quite strong and gusty, the leaves are really flying around. I amazed how quickly the trees are turning, some are nearly all red--so pretty--so many leaved to clean up, but I dont really mind, we love our trees.

We are having a sunny but slightly chilly with a mild breeze here today.  Think we will be having slightly warmer temps over the weekend.

This morning when I opened the blinds in the kitchen, I saw 3  beautiful deer in our little orchard munching on apples, what a lovely way to start my day, it appeared to be a Mother and her 2 young. We watched them for at least half an hour. How wonderful.

The sun has set and from my kitchen I can see the super moon, how amazing, just like the one in the movie "Moonstruck." I looks like you can almost touch it. Probably the last one I will see in my lifetime. Ii is clear and cold outside a great night to look at the moon ---- Bella Luna!
