Pioneer Woman--love her, hate her, don't care?

I want to open this topic up for discussion because I'm curious!  I've watched the Pioneer Woman's site change so much over the last few years, it's almost unrecognizable.  From her books to her upcoming Food Network show, she's not a blogger anymore as much as a celebrity, with full-blown satire/snark sites to boot, such as http://www.pienearwoman.com and http://www.thepioneerwomansux.com –I think you know you've made it when people are making fun of you, LOL.  What does this all mean?  She used to be everyone's favorite blogger and she was on the sidebar of every blog you stumbled over.  Is she still popular as a blogger, or do people just want to win a mixer or a camera?  Do the same readers relate to posts about fancy hotel rooms and the Real Housewives as related to her earlier posts about her life on the ranch?  If you liked her to begin with, do you still like her?  If she jumped the shark for you, why?

One of the reasons I'm curious is because I often have readers comment to me along the lines of, please don't change, and refer to PW.  And many times people have compared me to PW.  (Which is good, and bad.  Mostly, I don't like it.)

And, don't worry, I won't be changing that much, ever.  For the record, the downstairs project is no million-dollar lodge re-do, and I'm not planning to ever shoot a TV shoot down there.  LOL!  I'm just curious!  And actually, I =don't= hear readers mention her as often as they used to………..

Well, since you asked…    happy-butterfly

I would pretty much fall in the "don't care" category.  For me, there is plenty of room for all sorts of folks in the world, on the 'net, and even in my neighborhood, so it just doesn't impact my life that there are hundreds, thousands, or even a bazillion sites out there which hold zero, zip, nada interest for me.

Actually, at first her site was a little fussy but manageable… I went at first to see some recipe or other that a friend told me about, didn't care much for her recipes though so I didn't go often.  Later when I had reason to go back the had thing turned into a bloated kaleidoscope of …ok, this is going to sound harsh, but it's plain trashy.  (I feel kinda bad saying that)

I'm better with basics, a little glitter is ok just for fun, but rhinestone encrusted cowboy boots just don't appeal.

Too much is too much, and even way back when, she tried to be all 'down homey' and when looked closely, all I saw was a millionaire set up with her wearing a kerchief to cover up her pearls and diamonds.

Oh, and have any of you seen her on television?  I think she's supposed to get some time on the food network, the producers are probably going to go nuts trying to keep her calm and on track.

I think the satirical sites are funny to a point, but a little too mean. (mostly – ok I do laugh at some of it)

I agree with Pete. It's plain she probably had different goals from the beginning for blogging than you (Suzanne) have. And that's okay. Some people want to be rich and famous, some people just want to share what they know and connect with others in a real way. Personally, I'm on this site every day…for the connection as well as the knowledge. PW's site…almost never.

I (sorta) have a farm in Africa.

I liked the PW site a LOT at first. i really enjoyed the photography of the recipes, the comments, the story of she and Marlboro man. Then things started changing. A lot. The things that stand out that did me in and turned me off were her blase' attitude about using the word retardedand the attitude/making fun of her brother

I love not having to whip out annoying euphemisms like "Developmentally Disabled" or "Mentally Challenged" or "Intellectually Delayed." As a blood relative of a retarded person, I'm automatically exempt. I get to say retarded. Retarded.

And when she did the big bad canning post and it was sooooo bad. Really bad. Used the tongs upside down on the jars for one example.

And then there's Tasty Kitchen. Don't even get me started on the Canning section no

I don't use the word hate much – seems like a strong sentiment that doesn't have a good use most of the time. But I get a shiver when I click over there now and then.

Just feels so …. yuk. LOL

I'm in the "don't care" camp.  I know who she is, but I've never followed her.

I used to follow her faithfully, but I'm with the others. Her blog has exploded into a money making machine (marketing, branding, etc.) for PW and is not the same blog it used to be.

The book, the children's book, and now being a TV personality has changed her…. just like it did Paula Deen. I don't watch her anymore, either.  Can't take the fake.

I read/follow blogs because they are where I pretty much feel at home, can learn, and enjoy other's experiences. Now, PWs blog is too big to enjoy really. I do browse about once every week or two, because every now and then she does still post a normal recipe <wink>

Just speaking plainly, I think the Pioneer Woman's blog is trash.  Just checked it out a couple times. It holds no interest for me.  It is NOTHING like your blog, Suzanne.  Suzanne, your blog was the very first one I ever read and it introduced me to the blogging world and the first one I check out every day and come back to through out the day.  Thank you and please don't change.

I agree with Hershiesgirl.  I read/follow blogs because I feel comfortable, can learn and enjoy other's experiences.

Well, until this moment I've never heard of Pioneer Woman.  Um, must've been looking in other directions!  After a quick perusal of her website, I find little to trap my interest let alone develop love or hate.  A bit too kitschy for my taste although the websites poking fun were hilarious (and little twisted!).  Despite the reality that I've always lived as a suburbanite, I find CITR far more appealing in its offering of trying to live the country life.  Pioneer Woman? meh, don't care.

I just don't get what the hype is over her!  It's fake.  She has millions of page views, so it must mean people do at least visit the site whether they like her or not.  Those hater sites actually push views to her site, and uhhh, giving her more money!

I actually found her about the same time I found this site and was excited to find another "living in the country, back to basics" blog that I could learn from…you would think that with the name.  Um, no.  It didn't take long to figure out she was just a rich person finding something to do with her time…not being a basic "pioneer woman".  But I did try to win the darn mixers though!!  LOL!!!  I figured that was my frugal way to owning a KA.  Didn't happen and it's been a couple years since I've tried.

"Homeschooling" … tutors.  Hunh!

Hate is a strong word…but I highly dislike the concept of her site, it's fake.

There are a few nice website features on the site though, not the content.

Well, I've never been to her site, but I recently read her book, "Black Heels to Tractor Wheels", and although parts of it were admittedly witty, I found a lot of it rather offensive.  For instance, the way she and Marlboro man were so physically intimate way before they even considered marriage?  The huge overdose on making out and the fact that she claimed to be Christian but rarely mentioned her faith, much less expressed passion about it?  I think she started out well, but went downhill.  Her children's book "Charlie the Ranch Dog" is an obvious ripoff of Hank the Cowdog, which is, in my opinion, satirical genious.  Charlie may be a wonderful dog.  I don't doubt it.  But the book was a total flop with cute illustrations.  So…I guess I would say I don't really like her, although I don't HATE her.  Mostly I feel bad for her because she is really missing out on simple things that make life good.

The word "hate" was just kind of a play on love her, hate her.  I didn't mean it to sound so harsh.

I really love hearing your honest opinions.  Thank you!  It's a curious thing.  I look at her site and wonder, what do real people really think of that???

…eh…don't care.  I've only been to her site once, but wasn't terribly impressed.  I did buy her cookbook, but after looking over it, I returned it because it didn't seem real to me.  It felt like a production rather than what I look for cookbooks to be: teaching material.

I wish her luck, but I prefer to keep it real.

I appreciate what you do because I know it's real.  I've been to your farm, and I know that everything you blog about is….well, real.

Most of her site just isn't relevant to my life.  I definitely don't do high end gifts or a lot of European- mediterranean cooking.  There is no real small farming area like would apply to me.  I do love you guys!  I won't be a newbie (first posts must be approved) forever will I?

Where are we going and why are we in a handbasket?

I like her. She does live differently from most of us but I've enjoyed peeking into her world just as I've enjoyed peeking into Suzanne's. I have neither cow poo (Pioneer Woman) nor chicken poo (Suzanne) on my front porch, but that's only because I don't own cows or chickens. I can however identify with both blogs. Pioneer Woman because we share many of the same interests: horses, homeschool, I used to teach photography, I love to cook, entertain, decorate. My father wasn't a rancher but he farmed 10,000 acres of farmland in the Mississippi River Delta so I understand the large scale farm thing. I even have a special needs child, my middle daughter with Down Syndrome. Watching her interact with her two brothers and their gentle fun loving antics, well, I 'get' the whole sibling thing between Pioneer Woman and her brother. In fact, I love her Mike stories. They're like a glimpse into the future of my three children and I know our daughter will be not only be taken care of, but treasured.
I don't think Ree Drummond is fake at all. Just a different version of real.
I enjoy CITR because I share many interests here too. I love the whole small farm thing. I love to can and ferment and dehydrate food. We recently sold our little 43 acre farm, sold my horses, even gave away our dogs and moved into a CONDO (!?). Dumb idea. We are now looking for acreage again because I want my own Beulah Petunia. Haha. Really. And how can you live without a garden?
Anyway, just my two cents worth. I've learned a ton from the blog world.

I started to read her blogs, but became disenchanted way back!   And BTW , the recipes I have tried  are horrible.  Tried several, and I guarantee, a "real" cowboy wouldn't eat most of them.   She did have a great giveaway of a custom painted kitchen aid that I drooled over tho.

Keep up your great farm gal blog Suzanne.   I love it….   sun

I've been to her site a few times but it never pulled me in like CitR.

Suzanne, you just seem to say "Come on in, pull up a chair and sit a while." On this forum it's like I am back home…enjoying all of the knowledge and love of grandma, aunts, big sisters, little sisters, even brothers.

Since I have arthritis in my spine I can't be on my feet for long periods of time…I work awhile…sit awhile. My sitting time is usually spent on here.

I am sure there are those who love PW's site…It's just not a place I can relax.wink

I'm no longer a fan of PW.  Her site is a fairy tale.  Nothing is true and she admits that.  She also copies posts from other sites and no one knows unless you know the site.  Most of all I can not tolerate the way she treats her brother.  It's mean spirited.   It's not funny.  Perhaps because my sister is handicapped that I feel so strongly about this.
