I am so excited! As it turned out I got an unexpected 3 day weekend off.  I was determined to get the summer kitchen in order.  Hubby built shelves and hung curtains and just put himself at my disposal.  WOW! Anyway…here are some pics.  The last one is of a little eating nook area…excuse the tools with all the cast iron on the shelf… didn't get him to do all that.  I didn't do the picture but there is a ledge at the top to hold wooden boxes with empty canning jars…ready to fill.  I cooked in there all weekend long and it feels very efficient.  The real test will be when we get to harvest.  The building is kind of kitty cornered.  In one window you see a building..thats the garden shed.  In the other window…with the sink…..it overlooks the garden.

It was alot of fun this weekend. I had to test out the canning…so I canned kidney beans.  I even accomplished bread in the woodstove….Yay!  (sorry, I told you I was excited) I just wanted to share my happiness with CITR buddies.  Thanks for enduring!

Very nice, Birdi! and hubby!  Very envious here, too!

I'll think of you this summer when I am heating up the house with canning… and running my AC full blast… feeling my money blowing away with the constant hum of the electric bill!

Thank you but don't be envious.  It started to be more economic and keep the heat out of the house. Propane is very expensive here. And because I want to be self sufficient and protected in the event of a disaster.  Last year I did all of my canning outside on an old woodstove and was controlled by the weather.  We had a very little cookshack that hubby did maple syruping in.  After the family bbq, he ripped it down and said that he was building one better to accomodate both of us a little better. (this one is 10X20) I had NO idea that it would turn out to be this.  I am feeling very spoiled and grateful. I count my blessings everyday that hubby shares this dream with me.  Having a sawmill on site and a logger hubby kept the costs of this adventure to less than $1000+  the new to me woodstove cost.  This was just one more step to our self sustaining.  But it is going to be a whole bunches of fun!!!shimmy

Really, really cool, Birdi!  I remember you dreaming about this a couple of years ago.  Sooooo glad you have it now!!  And, I remember the pics of the original – this is DEFINITELY better!

That is wonderful!  My grandma always talked about the summer kitchen from her youth in Peoria, Ill. I love what you and your hubby have done!  What a wonderful thing to have access to!
