Over the last week or so I have been thinking about some of Susan's posts, and the fact that CITR means so much to so many of us, and it would leave a big hole in our hearts if the website had to be shut down.  For those of us that can donate, we should! For those of us who can't let's dedicate ourselves for the next month, in fact lets dedicate February to getting more traffic to this site.  The more traffic that comes, the more the ads are clicked, the more income for keeping my favorite blog and country living resources site going on and on and on!

So for February, if you have a blog, start directing some traffic to CITR, if you don't have a blog I know that you are all on Facebook, Google+, or a multitude of other networking sites that are out there, start resharing Susan's links to CITR with your own commentary to your friends and family on the great content.  If you already do this start visiting the site a few times a day if nothing more than to clicky clicky the ads, remember all of this is free to us, so I don't mind being advertised too, and I hope you feel the same way.

So this February I am going to get out there and share, share, share CITR website with my friends.  Let's see how much we can increase traffic here, WHO'S WITH ME!!

I will try to donate when and as much as I can, but I think it is a bit much to tell us that we "should".  Everyone has it tough these days, and my charity fund goes first to the people who are actually around me, in my physical reality, before a cyber-space community.

As for the other ideas, no can do. I wouldn't join a social networking site if someone paid me. And I never click on ads.

p.s. Just a suggestion, but maybe Suzanne ought to think about making CITR a subscription site. I don't know what-all is involved with that, but clearly only people seriously interested in the site's content would join.

Well, I'm pretty sure we don't actually have to click on the adds.  The pageviews of people being on the site to just see the adds that cycle on the CitR pages count.  Just being here helps, and that's no skin off my nose!  I do however find myself clicking on an advert now and then just because some of them look interesting.  Only on the established sort of adds, for products I'm interested in, not for 'free software to speed up your computer' or whatever, though that sort of thing just never shows up here.  Most of the adds are for things that sort of reflect CitR stuff, at least for me.  Thing is, if you have ad-blocker or similar programs enabled, disabling that here is important.  I have mine really tight blocking things everywhere but HERE!  It makes me appreciate it more other places laugh, but also makes me appreciate the sort of ads found here.  Pretty decent ones for the most part!

I didn't take BGh's comment about donating as a directive, more as a affirmation of how she felt about it personally.  That's just me though, I tend to be pretty relaxed about things.  I have donated a little bit, and I'll do so again soon even though they're pretty small amounts, after all, even a slow dripping faucet will fill a large bucket over time… but that's all absolutely a personal choice Erzulie.  I also listen and donate to public radio because I get so much enjoyment from it.

I really like the idea of sharing links and getting friends interested.  It really is a fun place to be after all and the pageviews count towards advertizing dollars!  happy-feet

Great idea, bgheuchert….it's good to give back to someone and somewhere we all get sooooo much from.

For myself, it's been just over a year now that I have been visiting on a daily basis.  Since I started coming here, I've learned to pressure can, dehydrate and make cheese.  I have made bread weekly since learning of Grandmother bread in all it's incantations, and have not bought store bread in over a year.  (I have two loaves in the oven as I type this, one white one 10 grain)

And this is because of Suzanne's immensely readable, enjoyable, informative site.  And the community here on CITR forum.  So my vote is yes, with my internet traffic.  I will click on those ads (free to me, pays for site maintenance for Suzanne).  I will share on Twitter and Facebook and Pinterest, so all the folks I know can share in this wonderful site.

So, challenge accepted, to give back a mere fraction of what I get from my friends in this shared community!

Nope, never meant it to be a bossy or negative thing, just a fun little social networking project for those who wanted to participate. So for those who would be happy to have some fun with it Feb is CITR month for me and whomever would care to join me.

Did I say that I think we don't get alot from Suzanne and CITR? Certainly we do, but my charity dollars go first to, say, kids who need a dentist and can't afford one. Or to a local fund drive for the widow and children of a man killed at work. THEN, if I have anything left over, I would give it to CITR.

It just dawned on me why I can't like this forum, even though I want to. And that's because of the passive-aggressive nature of the people on it. I have noticed that anyone who even hints at disagreeing with the unwritten social rules here is treated to a heavy dose of passive-aggression, 7-year-old-girl-style. And the folks who have been here the longest and post the most are the most guilty of passive-aggressive behavior. They are the ones who REALLY keep people in line…not the moderators, who seem to be blind to the passive-aggression, and collude with the passive-aggressors, the way you just did, BG.

Come to think of it, maybe that's the reason for the drop-off in traffic here…could it be that most people dont' stick around very long because they can't go along with the brown-nose-or-shut-up vibe here?

I don't really understand your problem here, Erzulie and I believe you mix up 2 things here.

Nobody forces you to donate, nobody will tell you where to spend your money on.

If somebody wants to donate that is totally up to the person, it doesn't mean you get more or less rights.

The whole idea of bgheugert was that by getting more traffic to this side..just by posting it on facebook or tell your friends, Suzanne might be getting a bit more money from the ads.

Then your statement that you don't like this forum, even if you want to..

Your only active since a week..and in that week you posted 20 times, but you must have been reading for a while, since your knowledge about this forum, gives me that impression.

You don't have to like it…you don't even have to be a member..we love all the members…but please don't stay if you don't like it here.

I know  a lot of people do…they stay…others don't..they move on.

Sometimes members are active a lot…then find something else they like better..or don't need this forum anymore..or just have a change in life.

Its all good….as long is everybody happy….

should/SHo͝od/

Verb:
  1. Used to indicate obligation, duty, or correctness, typically when criticizing someone's actions:  "he should have been careful".
  2. Indicating a desirable or expected state:  "by now students should be able to read".

Nobody seems to have noticed that I did not say that I don't want to donate, or that I feel obligated to donate.

Neither did I say that I don't like this forum…I said that I can't like it because of the go-along-with-the-crowd-or-we-will-shun-you vibe that is here. And I'm not the first person to notice that vibe. I remember, specifically, during the Dave Bollanger/stolen goat picture incident, that dissenters were marginalized.

So, you hardly have a forum here. It is more like a cheerleading squad.

Dang!  I get busy with life and some other issues, come back for a visit and seem to have missed all the fun!    laugh

One thing that many if not most of us enjoy about this particular community is that there are so many options for plugging in to the community.  We haven't always been that way.  It's something that Suzanne and everyone working behind the scenes worked very hard to develope over time, adding to and improving the site as new technology became available and things became economically feasible.

No one is required to participate in any way here – on the forum, on the blog, at FBR, or in any other way.  All that is asked is that if you choose to comment anywhere here that you do so as is outlined, using common courtesy and generally good manners.

None of us is perfect.  But we do like to keep the discourse at least civil!  happy-flower  Speaking for myself, my default position is to assume that folks are not intentionally being snarky, trying to offend, or otherwise cause problems.  That's just who we, all coming from very different backgrounds, experiences, and maturity levels, are.  We bring all that with us to share with others and learn from them.

BGHeurchert, that is a great idea, and one I try to do. Refreshing the page is something I also try to do.  Thank you for sharing.

Erzuli, helping a child get dental care is a great thing to do. Feeding a neighbor, helping a widow, anonymously paying part of a child's church camp fees for a single mom, supporting public radio, teaching someone to do their own taxes, sharing the bounty from our gardens, giving Suzanne an "AttaGirl!". All wonderful things to give and receive. Thank you for sharing.

Donating is so personal, we all have our own ways of donating: cash, check, a hand, a prayer, a smile, a loaf of bread … just fill in YOUR blank! I am happy with the choices I make, and that is all that is important for any of us.

Be well,

Billie

Hey there!  Thank you so much, bgheuchert!

Everyone is welcome on this forum and that has always been the case, and that is the same with the commenters on my blog.  My position has always been, and always will be, that everyone is welcome up and until they attack other commenters or posters on the forum, or until they have attacked me enough that I am tired.  Mostly, I'm okay with people attacking me for a lot longer than I will allow commenters/posters to attack other commenters/posters.  I consider it my responsibility to provide a comfortable environment for members of the community, and I take that responsibility seriously.

It is okay to disagree.  It is not okay to attack anyone.

That said, I want to also say that I appreciate so much the support of the community here.  Support is many things, and as I wrote my book about my life at Stringtown Rising, there were a number of times in the book that I noted the support of my readers as carrying me through the darkest days.  You carried me through that journey on your wings of unflagging support and encouragement–in your presence and in your comments–as you do today.

P.S.  I will NEVER make CITR a subscription site.  If I have to get an "outside" job to pay my bills and not write as often, the site will remain open to everyone, always, to read past posts, to enjoy recipes, share ideas, mine the "gold" of ideas posted here on the forum by the community, etc.  CITR will never cost a penny to readers, that is my forever pledge and always has been.

Clover made me do it.

I didn't really want to respond to this, but then it occurred to me that for some people, it might cause them to feel some concern for me that is unnecessary.  Traffic is actually UP, not down.

Okay, carry on.  sun

I've just finished reading the above posts and was quite dismayed to see negative comments.  After all, no one is twisting our arm to login and read this site, it's a matter of choice.  I happened to stumble upon CITR through another website and since that time, I have to say, I look forward to reading all the posts each and every day.  I have gotten much enjoyment and have learned so much about country life and all the wonderfully marvelous people who have contributed their life experiences and know how.  I don't live in the country but wish I could pull up stakes and have the courage Suzanne has had in making life-altering decisions.  Suzanne, you are an inspiration to many of us and even though many of us have never met you there is a feeling of kinship.  May God bless all you have accomplished and all you strive to do in the future.  With all good thoughts and prayers your "sister of the heart".

Last week sometime I suggested that if those of us who sell "stuff" could sell some things and donate the $ to CITR. I also said I would do that. I will, unless it breaks the rules of the road here. I'll also come back to this thread to post a link, again, unless it breaks the rules of the road to do that.

Our finances are pretty tight right now, and I just don't have an extra load o' cash, so this is my way of supporting an effort I love, in the same way that I used to buy/sell the books of the authors who were friends of mine when I had a bookstore.

Talking CITR up in social media is a good idea. When the book has a publication date, I'll describe the "secret" methods I used to promote books/authors when I had the shop. Nothing all that secret, but they don't work until a book is actually listed in Books in Print or Forthcoming Books in Print!
