OfflineKitchen was out of order all day as the painters were occupying it, so..I started a new embroidery project. A flour sack towel that will have one of each of the 4 kinds of livestock we own in each corner. Started with the goat. (hen, duck and cow will be in the other 3 corners) Cute animal patterns at: http://madebyjoel.com/2011/06/duck-and-goat-coloring-sheets.html

OfflineHope you are doing better today, Miss Judy.
Today is a good day for me. Not too many aches or pains. So we decided to go out in the canoe and paddle the creek near by. Lots of wild life to take pictures of, and fish if you want to. I was using the zoom to look at a blue heron on the shore and noticed something moving in the water. Tipped the camera down, and sure 'nough, it was a gator. We decided to bird watch elsewhere. Not a huge one. Only 7 or 8 ft. We were in a 15 ft canoe, but neither of us felt like wrestling. This is just West of Houston Tx. Gators are in most every fresh body of water. We were just surprised as we have been paddling this creek for 7 years and have never seen a gator bigger than 4 ft. Makes you wonder what you aren't seeing!?!

OfflineJoell, do you use a mechanical peeler, or peel by hand? A bushel is a lot to do by hand. I imagine the deer appreciate you letting them have the lower apples. Time for them to start packing on the pounds for winter.
Did you ever play the game with apple peels that my daughter and I always did when she was younger? I would peel an apple, taking care to not break the peel. If you got an entire apple peel off, you would toss it over your shoulder onto the floor. Whatever alphabet letter shape the peel took was supposed to represent the initial of the first name of the man you would marry. I usually had to do this several times until she got an initial she liked. ![]()

Hello Squeeges Mom, I just purchased an apple peeler this year, although Ross was kind enough to help me peel apples
. I have our guest room ready for he and Nancy just in case.
I never had children but that sounds like a fun game to play with the little ones and learning as well.
You are right about the deer, they are so thin now because of the lack of rain and foliage, we are planning to put out food for them this winter, hopefully that will help save some of them, many have been dying here because of the lack of food. Ater we pick the apples we need, we usally pull down as many as we can and leave them on the ground for the animals.

OfflineThat was good of Ross to help. Bet it made the job go a lot easier and much more fun!
If you were/had been a house wife in the dustbowl days, I imagine the hobos passing by your home would have drawn a cat's face somewhere on your property to alert other passerbyers (is that a word?) that a kind-hearted woman lives here. The critters are really having a tough time these last few years. Thanks for helping them.

OfflineI'm waiting on hubby's plane to land in TX while DS and I stay behind in Nairobi. Father in law took a turn for the worse so we drove in yesterday and he got a flight out last night. The cancer seems like it is quite pervasive and he has contracted pneumonia, as well so they have him in a pulmonary ICU. 10 pm here/2pm there so that makes communicating a challenge. I'll stay up till I hear from him and I'm sure he'll go to hospital from the airport. We're all pretty tired.

Offlineps – spent half the day making phone calls back to folks in the town we live as our electricity has been off over 24 hrs now. (Got a call about it yesterday). Tracking down the repairmen, who are trying to track down the problem. Hoping they get it fixed tomorrow and I don't get back next month to a fridge/freezer full of moldy food. Been there, done that. Lest you worry, we are not despairing. We are praising God for all the details he's worked out and all the friends who are helping us in big ways.

Offlinemamajoseph, sorry to hear about illness in your family. I know how trying it is to have family thousands of miles away when there is a crisis. Praying for you and yours![]()
I am working in apples…. again. Apple pie jam, apple conserve, and apple pie filling. Also steam juicing the peelings and cores. When I do a lot of canning I am also on the computer a lot. I work awhile and rest a while. I am enjoying the day![]()

OnlineSounds really, really good, Joell!
We've been to Cabella's today. Even ate in their little cafe. I nearly was talked into getting a 24-tray commercial dehydrator from their bargain cave! Too much, too much.
Then a trip through Sam's. All the little doggies have food now, for a couple of weeks at least. And I bought my annual gallon of apple cider. It is now officially Autumn at our house now!
