Offlinea huge wall of storms passed through WV last night – about 27 out of 55 counties were affected and the Governor has declared a state of emergency because of widespread power outages and temps predicted to be at least 100 degrees today. My living room window was sucked out and shattered, top of a large pine snapped off and hit the neighbor's outbuilding. But power came back on for us after 3 am so I am happy for that. Supposed to have our family reunion today and it's indoors, so, waiting for info if that area has power :(

I'm glad you're safe, Dede. I heard about the storms on the news and wondered about the WV members of CITR, and whether Suzanne has power.

Offlinewe're ok at my house – got the hole covered and still have power. Much of WV has no power and that means no gas at gas stations. Cars pouring off of the interstate here as usual (I am near the intersection of I79 and Rt. 50 in WV) – travelers looking for a quick fill-up and find no gas or long waiting lines. Motels/hotels full where there is power. Restaurants that are open are packed because people are coping with no power but simply eating every meal out?!
Water being shut down in some small towns due to lack of power and inability of generators to maintain the system for more than a couple of days. From Facebook I hear that there is no ice and spotty gas available. generators sold out the first few hours of the day yesterday. We're not even 48 hours post-storm and it's pretty hairy to realize the total lack of preparedness.
I assume that Suzanne has no power and may not have for a few days. The damage is so widespread from the storm that major issues are being dealt with before all the hundreds of thousands of smaller ones can be reached (trees down, etc.) Many people are relying on their cell phones to text and check on each other and look for info on Facebook. Satellite issues are happening too and banks are without power so debit cards are refused many places right now that are open.

Offlinedede, thanks for the update. glad you got your window covered…Had the same a couple of years ago, storm windows sucked off the building and top 3rd of 100+ yr old maple tree sheared off. wotamess.
Let's hope Suzanne's (winter) preparations have left her in good stead for sheltering herself and her animals during this wicked storm. Can't remember if she has a small generator or not. . . it's bad here again today, and we know our weather moves towards you folks. Be safe

OfflineDede,
I was thinking of you today. DH and I went to the produce auction outside Shippensburg, PA. A bunch of the buyers are from WV. They were all talking today and none of them have electricity yet. Some aren't expected to get it until maybe this weekend. They also mentioned how this has had a huge impact on their business because no one is buying fresh produce because they don't have refrigeration. I never considered that part of the picture. Several said they came here knowing they weren't going to buy anything, they just needed to have something normal in their lives right now.
Hope you're doing well and things return to normal quickly.

OfflineThanks kellyb for thinking 'bout me! Yes, estimates are Sunday for rural areas to be restored in my (upper half) of the state but who knows if that will happen. The damage to major transmission towers alone was unreal. We've been lucky here overall re: power in town, my office too. The daycare where my 2 grandkids go just got power on last night though and my DIL has been off using vaca time keeping her own plus the one I am raising so that I can work (we work for the same company). Common for part of one street to have power and the next 1/2 street not. Quite frustrating for folks. Neighboring counties are still at 90%+ NO power and it's day 4. I saw where some towns are setting up dumpsters for folks to dispose of spoiled food. My town has decided to pick up tree debris up to 16" diameter as long as one can get it to the curb over the next 2 weeks. It does seem at least that folks are generally calming down and making do. It's horrendously hot though and I really worry about who is out there with no one checking on them……..

OfflineGood to hear that you're making due and doing fine. Keep us posted so we know you're ok.
Every night on the news they're telling people to check on elderly neighbors and folks they haven't seen and we've only had temps in the mid to high 90's.
Twenty miles west of us and 20 miles east of us still have some folks without power. We were very blessed to have missed the nasty storms.

OfflineWell, not sure why I posted our info over in the "what are you doing" topic, other than it started out because I was cleaning out the refrigerator!
My county still has the largest number of residents without power in the state. Suzanne is in the next county north. We were both hit hard last night with another storm. We maintained power, but I held my breath a couple of times when things flickered last night, and again this afternoon. Am choosing to believe that each time the lights flicker it means some more people have gotten power! (Well, it COULD be that.
)
There are spoiled food stations all over the county for people to rid themselves of the refuse. Very glad to see that.
So, things are improving, but slowly. We may have summer storms late in the day for at least the rest of the week. But that is to be expected.
