OfflineHere on the south Jersey shore we are battened down….hurricane Sandy is bearing down on us – expected to make a direct hit on us. We have water in bottles, bathtubs, etc. Plenty of food and charcoal plus our propane powered stove to cook it. The flooding is our greatest worry. The tides were high even before the rain started and it is supposed to rain much more heavily over the next few days.
My horses are staying up the street where they have been over much of the summer. They have for room to run from falling branches, etc. up there. The chickens are in their coop, the dogs and cats (plus the guinea pig, cockatiels, and parakeet) are inside. Food for all of them is at hand. If the power outages they promise go as long as predicted we can haul water from the rivers.
We have food to last a long time. Our vintage Chambers range is propane powered so we can cook. Lots of charcoal on hand for the bbq and dutch oven. Several cases of water for drinking plus filled containers in the freezer and just around….we should be able to flush and drink too.
Most of all, we have our family – two and four legged – together. We will weather this storm, whatever it brings. Praying for another dud, of course!

OfflineSurely do hope that you are correct, JerseyMom! Best to be prepared for whatever happens, though.
We have been doing the same here. Checking and rechecking everything. We've had rain (often just a drizzle) all day, and it is chilly. Everything is coming from the south for now, but that system to the west threatens to dump snow on us, and it is not all that far away.
My main worry here is for the critters. We have a trio of little dogs who are semi-feral and rather isolated from everyone else in their pen. And the itty bitty kiity (the one that some of you remember was stranded on my roof for a couple of weeks) has just adjusted to life in the house and being allowed outside upon demand. Now it is very confused.
Hard to believe that we were running around in short sleeves Friday!

Pete, I hope all is well for you. We have a recently rescued kitty too. He was 1.1 pounds when found almost two weeks ago. He's 3.5 now! Not allowed out of his crate though because apparently he was hurled from a car resulting int a badly broken back leg and a damaged front one that fortunately is healing well. People are so awful!!!

OnlineThe weather here is deteriorating. This storm is one by which all other storms will be measured. We are anticipating close to a foot of rain over the entire Susquehanna water shed and consequently major river flooding on the lower river. The latest forecast is for more than a foot of snow in the maryland mountians.

OfflineIt is very cold and rainy here with some snow showers, we spoke with family last night in WV and they are getting hit with wind and snow and are all expecting power outages. The local weather forcast is indicating we may have some high winds that will bring power outages, we are as ready as can be, wiill go into town this morning and pick up a couple of perscriptions, just in case. I have been watching the weather channel since 3am, I am praying for all of those in the affected areas. I cant even imagine how they must feel. Stay safe and please keep us advised on your progress if you can.

OfflineIt's snowing on the other side of my county! A friend one county from here arrived home from work to 5 inches of snow at his house.
Wind has picked up and the temp keeps dropping.
But, if this bad weather stops at the river, we may still miss the worst of it? (I keep hoping.)

OfflineNE Ohio is cold and windy! No surprise there of course. I don't see any new trees down in our woods around the house and I checked on our neighbors and all is well. We still have power so that's good. I hope everyone in the CitR family is safe and warm at home, or if they had to leave their homes that they're in a comfortable safe place.

Cold rain, snow and icy, the wind had been relentness, it is one of the worst nights I can remember for quite some time, we has winds up to 60 MPH. Since we sit up quite high here, the wind, and the frozen rain makes a terrible sound. All in all, we are very lucky here compared to what is going on along the coast, just terrible. People losing homes and property that have been in their families for generations.
@ ROSS--if you are able to be on line, please tell us how you are doing, we just saw photos of the weather in Maryland.
Take care.

OfflineI'm in Utah and we have about 4 inches of snow outside now. As a Southern California Girl I am not used to driving in this white, fluffy stuff. Kinda frightens me. I just saw my neighbor drive by so I am about to try my hand at it. Been here a little while but it take some getting used to. It's darned cold! 21 degrees last night! Learned that checking to see if the water is dripping keeps things from freezing! (okay, don't laugh) I turned on the kitchen sink water and it came out like a slushy all ice crystals this morning! Live and learn.
Can't wait for spring…..sometime around May they say. The Marmots come out of hybernation about that time. Cute little devils, Marmots.
I spent 42 years in California so this is a new experience for me! Allows me tons of time to go online and learn more cooking skills.

OfflineThe first snow of the year is always the worst (driving wise) where ever you live. Just take it slow and you will be okay. When we lived out in the country we would have to leave the water dripping to prevent freezing.
The weather here in Kansas is COOOLD. We had the coldest night of the season last night down in the low 20's and about the same tonight. No snow or rain though.
