Please be safe to all who are in the path of this mess. A lot of devastation has been left behind it as it rolls on eastward.

It is 90 degrees and sunny. Feels like 95 degrees. I have been repotting some of my houseplants. I had a couple of big bags of potting soil that had a bunch of soil gnats in them. I had to "sterilize" the soil first. It is nice to be outside for a little while and then step back into the cool. I empathize with the yard crews and maintenance people I see outside. They don't always have the opportunity to find a cool place for a respite from the heat.

The majority are found in and around the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic side of Florida for the USA, however, the ocean currents can and will take a seed dropped off in Costa Rica and twirl it around for years until it lands in Nova Scotia, or Japan or some other coastal area. Most of the seeds that have the hard shells that can float long enough are from the South America area. So it stands to reason the Gulf area finds most. But the Sargasso weeds catch a lot of the seeds, and when the sargasso comes in, so do the seeds. I find the best times are after a busy hurricane season in the Gulf. A lot of sargasso is pushed on shore bringing lots of seeds.

My daughter used to bring home shells and such from trips to the beach. Occasionally something live would be missed and end up in the sack. And of course that would be the sack that was forgotten in the back corner of the truck. Until it started smelling. Thats the nice thing about sea beans. No smelly sea shells and no worries about inadvertantly killing a sea creature.

Sea beans are actually seeds that have very hard outer shells that fall from their respective plants (usually on another continent or from another country) into a creek, the creek floats the seed to the river, the river floats the seeds to the ocean, and the ocean currents swirl the seeds around the world until the seeds wash up on shore and we find them. Lots of interesting stories and history about various sea beans or perhaps more correctly Drift Seeds. Sea Beans is a common or nick name given by us Sea Beaners. (I know, awful name but finding and identifying these seeds is very addictive). A good source of info and pictures of some of the more common sea beans such as sea hearts, hamburger beans, and Mary's bean are found at seabean.com

The Mary's bean is quite rare. I have found maybe 10 in all my years of looking. They are dark brown to black about the size of a quarter, and have a cross impressed on one side. The cross is from the hilum in the seed pod that holds it in place as it matures. History has it that it is passed from mother to daughter to ease child birth pain. The hamburger bean looks just like a hamburger on a bun. Surfers and Hawaiians would drill them and wear them as an amulet to keep water monsters away. Sea hearts look like puffed hearts made of mahogany. They polish beautifully. The seed of a monkey vine. Supposedly the largest seed pod. I wish I had some pics, but you can see them on seabean.com under the identification heading.

Sorry, I probably gave you way more info than you wanted. That is what happens when I get started on sea beans. I have made some simple jewelry from them as well. And I always carry a Mary's bean for luck in my purse.

Everyone who wants to go to the beach for the day, listen up. My Mother's Day gift is a trip to the beach (Gulf of Mexico, Matagorda TX). We are just doing a day trip, but we will be leaving early and coming home late. Y'all are invited. Bring your picnic baskets and sunscreen. You will need both. 85 degrees and mostly sunny are forecast. What fun if we all could go play for the day in the sand. The water is still chilly, but doable for brief swims. Sea shells, sea beans, good fishing. Going during the week so not too many other people. Who is in?

I looked out of the window this morning at daylight and the roofs were white and the ground was covered with frost, we are supposed to get another tonight, I sure hope this is the end of it. We are supposed to have a cooler than usual summer this year, that won't be all bad----if we ever have summer.

Yeah, we are getting your storms today. Just had a doozy come through. We received 1.3 inches in less than an hour. It got so dark I could not see to walk through the house without turning on lights. lots of lightening and thunder. More rain on the radar to come. I do believe I will get my water wings and my canoe ready. May need it if the storm sewers back up. At least I won't have to water this week!

It. is. raining and has been all day since early morning; this is a gentle, soaking rain which is sorely needed. Colorado, as well as so many other states in this part of the country are in a drought and waters are getting very low. It is supposed to rain the rest of the week and if it stays like this there should be no problem with flooding at our level. However the Waldo Canyon burn scar from last year is under severe flood watch.

With all the rain, spring snow, and subsequent flooding, let's remember our chicken sista's who may be busy sandbagging or evacuating. Remember, Mommafox was one of thousands pushed out of their homes during the last spate of flooding.

Well Said Bonita, to often we forget when it isnt happening in our back yard, I hope Mommafox and the others affected are safe. It is cold and raining here today, I have been through a very bad flood as a child and you cant even imagine what it is like until you have been through one.
