I tried my extension office for something else once, and they were so useless. Surprise, surprise, Detroit. But maybe I can find another branch or something. The community colleges might have something and I think now that you mention it, I'll look around at the local gardening clubs and see if they do anything like that. I didn't even think of any 4H connections before, if I contact them they might be able to direct me. I have done BWB but I'd like to learn all types. I'm checking out a book called Preserving Food Without Canning, Freezing, etc. and it includes all kinds of methods that seem interesting. I got it before but didn't get to look through it well. I have a friend who loves this stuff and is interested in learning too, but she's over an hour away from me and between family obligations and work we'd be hard pressed to get together for it too often, but maybe next year we can make some time. We don't really have small farms too near us, all 30 minutes or more, but maybe I could volunteer my help with preserving for some of the haul and learn in the process! laugh

Hi Wanna Farm,

If you are looking for good prices on produce you might want to try Blocks in Romulus.  I don't know how far you are from them, but they do have some great deals.  The deals get even better if you are there in the evening and the start marking down to get rid of it for the night.  One time it was fill a bag with corn as much as you could get in it for $1.  Tomatoes by the case, tons of apples, by the pound, 1/2 bushel or bushel.  This is where we got our tomatoes in the fall.

If you find something in the area for classes please pass it on.  I BWB, pressure can, freeze and would like to do more dehydrating, but need a new dehydrator.

I was sooooooo to see the Walmart sale on the pressure canner, chose it and some accessories…proceeded to  checkout, and they say nope, not to Canada!   So not fair that great sales only happen in the States!hissy-fit

Hi justdeborah2002,

Watch the Canadian Walmarts and also Canadian Tired, they carry the canners too.  You just need to watch for sales.

This year the Health Departments in the surrounding counties had canning classes…it may not be something they will have every year, as it's a budget thing, but I would make some calls to the County Extension offices, Health Department.  I think canning is becoming more and more popular these types of places will be doing more to make sure it is being done safely.

Yes, I heard a radio show about a fancy kitchen supply store that was doing workshops on canning too, no charge, just show up for it, then they of course hope you'll browse through the store and spend lots of money! In fact, the speaker suggested if you have any stores like that, by calling as asking if they have such things now, they may add such classes to their scedule of 'events' this coming spring or summer!

The amount of money you'd "save" by purchasing supplies at one of these overpriced places and doing your own canning is highly doubtful!  Thing is, as the speaker said, it isn't always so much that people will can and save vast quantities of cash by canning beans and tomatoes, (though we know there is savings there) but that they can make at least some fancy goods that are MUCH too expensive to buy in those specialty shops and departments.  It's about more than basic canning, it's being able to savor and share the fancy things that are impossible (or nearly so) to afford these days, and then gilding the lilly even more by being able to say, "I made it myself, and wanted to share it with you."

The speaker then said that they scored big time at a yard sale just a few weeks earlier!  Several cases of very fancy jars for just $2 a case.  I bet the original buyer paid that much or more per JAR!  LOL

Paws_Bakery,

Thanks for the searching ideas.  Crappy Tire only has the pressure cookers, that they say can be used for canning…no gauge to know how many PSI…and Walmart doesnt have them on the website at this time of year….I have found one at BedBath&Beyond (believe it or not), but I still am looking out for a better deal.  Of course, looking for one in December is difficult….but then again, I'm not one to do things in a "normal" fashion!

Deborah,

Do you know anyone in the states who you could ship it to, and they could in turn ship it to you marked as 'gift'? Unless that would be too expensive. If your near the states, you could drive over and pick it up. People come here from Windsor all the time.

Paws,

I like Block's, I do go there every year. I also like Kurtzhal's (sp?) on Sibley near Telegraph. They're usually cheaper on some things and I can always get my flowering baskets there earlier than Block's, but I think they're the same on veggies and don't have as many. But they're  never as busy, either, so I can avoid all those people.

You're welcome. I hope you find something at a reasonable price.  I'm so lucky I'm in Michigan most weekends and have the best of both worlds.  Hopefully C Tire brings them back early so you can get a look at them.  Hmmm hard to believe that BB&B has them… but at least that is one more option.  Do you have coupons you could use to buy it?

I don't seem to do things in a "normal fashion" either…LOL

Iwannafarm,

I did not know of that place, I will have to do a search and see if I can find it.  Sometimes it's crazy at Block's and others there isn't to many people. Good to know I have another option for looking for produce.  Thanks for sharing.

Cheryl,

There's also Schwart's, further West on Sibley. They're pretty big, but I don't know if they have produce or not. I don't really go to that one.  I'm not sure on the spelling of that one, either. I know there are others I drive by sometimes, but I can't remember where they are. If I do, I'll let you know.

Thanks Heather!!!

I'm always on the look out for new places to buy produce.  There is a farmers market near us, but usually the prices are so high that you can't afford to can anything.  Or they don't sell in bulk, and that doesn't make it any easier.

I'll have to make the trip up Telegragh again next year and see if I can find these places.  I have been coming down from Waterford and getting on M5 and then 275 to Romulus since Telegraph was under construction.

Hey Cheryl, mabye you can answer something my husband and I were talking about the other day. Why do Canadians come to Michigan to buy groceries? The money is not worth as much, you have to pay to come over, it's kind of far for groceries…we can't figure it out?

Hi Heather,

For the canning stuff we did at Steven's in Wateford we found Blocks to have good prices.  I have canned a lot of stuff at my house and have my favorite places to buy stuff. Some of those prices are pretty close and for some things even a better deal.  You have to know your prices so we do can at both houses.

As for groceries… a 3 liter bag of milk is over $4.00 you can buy a gallon of milk at Krogers – white or chocolate for $1.99.  One gallon is approximately 3.8 liters…. big difference.  Eggs, turkeys, cheese, detergent, paper products and so much more are so much cheaper.  I can buy clothes at really great sales and the sales tax is less than half, plus I can't find that kind of prices at home.

Gas is cheaper in Michigan so a fill up saves more than you are paying in for crossing fees.  People that are buying groceries are usually do other shopping as well.

Canadian and American money is almost par…  I'm in Michigan most weekends anyways so for me it's easy to shop there.  It gives me options and I make the best of both worlds.

Wow! I had no idea. I here I'm always complaining about how expensive everything is. bug-eyed

I will definitely try not to take that for granted any more. Do you have to pay a duty on the way back in?

Since I'm over for more than 48 hours and I don't ever reach my limit, no I don't pay duty.  But I know people who will shop and pay the duty because it's still cheaper.  Or there is a good chance that you won't be asked to go in to pay duty so even better.

And to get stuff here free is almost unheard of.  On the weekend I picked up four General Mills products at Kroger and got 2 gallons of milk free.  That went to my son and his girl friend and her 2 kids.  Normally I would not have picked up that much cereal, but it doesn't go bad before it gets eaten… and then I could give away the millk.

If anyone is looking to buy canning supplies, you might check out "Lehman's" online.  This is a store located in the Ohio Amish country and they do catalog/online sales of everything related to rural/farm living all year round.  I believe they would have any canning supplies available year round.

Suzanne and I are going to take a road trip to Lehmann's sometime – it is about 3.5 hours drive from our place.

I love Lehman's catalog! I drool over it every time I get it. They're only a few hours from me, too, only from the other direction. Maybe one day I'll get to go down there. Take lots of pictures!

I went to Lehmans when my son lived in Ashland Ohio. It was wonderful. A lot of hard to find items all under one roof! Maybe a little pricey… but it is definitely worth the trip. That's one place where I could "window shop" all day!yes

I wonder if they offer food preservation classes? lol I think after January things will calm down here, and I'll find someone who's offering a class somewhere around here. Or, if Dede does get something together, I have a friend who would love to go with me if I can get some money together by then!
