I don't knit or crochet, but I would like to work with felted wool for pillows and bags. It's very hard to find wool fabric is South Carolina, and I will not pay the excessive price for little felted wool pieces at the craft store. Any suggestions?

Jeannie, most of my friends who are into the felted wool thing scour the racks at Goodwill, the Salvation Army, etc. At least that way you might pick up some basic colors and narrow down what you have to buy at a craft or fabric store.

Goodwill's the way to go! Do you have Freecycle in your area? I've not tried getting wool sweaters there, but I've seen all sorts of stuff posted for FREE even in my little area. Can't get much better than free in my book.
I do so miss my fibercrafts. This dang studying is getting OLD. I wanna play! Tammy

I always get a chuckle at the suggestion to shop at Goodwill for used woolen clothing. I'm from Southern California. The weather in CA (or SC) is such that you won't find anyone wearing wool, much less donating it to Goodwill. Best suggestion? Find a friend that lives up north and beg them to shop at Goodwill for you.

What kind of wool are you looking for? Like mens suits? or is that too thin?

It's Fall, and I'm wondering if anyone has started knitting, crocheting or felting for Christmas gifts??? Did anyone work with a fiber they hadn't before??? Did you love it or hate it — and why???
I recently pulled out my carding machine and moved my wheel inside (from the studio), Also pulled out my drop spindle, and made up a take along spinning bag.
Anyone else??
Know of any good sources for fleece or roving??
Etsy is a good place. I don't know how prices and stuff will compare, but Etsy has lots of supplies in the fibers catergory!

I think I will peruse the trift shops, we do have a lot of them in the Columbia area. Maybe some 'Yankees' have donated their wool clothes, because you do not need them here. I don't mean anything negative when I use 'Yankee' that just means anybody not born in the South. After all my great-great grandfather, the notorious Phineas Freeman Frazee was from New Jersey.

Well I have some wool mens suits in gray and brown and womens jackets in royal blue. I have taken them all apart and and washed them. They are still sitting on the shelf. I wanted to penny rug with them, but know I never will.
Who wants them?

Thanks Kelleh. I was hoping some knew of other sources – not listed on Etsy (or Ebay).
I've used all of my own roving, and won't have any until Spring shearing. I have some friends that I purchase llama and alpaca roving from (again, neither is listed on Etsy), but was hoping for some more sources.
Thanks again for your suggestion.

I was getting carried away with fiber things on the quilting thread, so I thought I'd post that here. Does anyone spin, weave, crochet, have their own sheep/rabbits/goats for this purpose? I was surprised to hear how many people are still doing these domestic crafts. I go to fiber festivals and am astounded at the numbers AND the artists are always ready to corrupt another victim. Thats how I caught the bug. I need to stay at home in a cave….I have way too many addictions.
I crochet, knit a little, spin, have a rabbit for fiber right now…soon to have sheep. And Gizmo, I have never worked with llama yet? Still exploring sheep and goats. I will try though because I'm thinking about putting a llama in pasture to guard my sheep.
I can't wait to hear from all of you.
I dye, spin and weave. I have an eight-shaft jack loom, and I am currently in love with fancy twills, shadow weave and crackle weave. A wonderful source for all sorts of fiber on the internet is R.H. Lindsay in Boston. They have an incredible selection, and their prices are about half of what you;d pay at a retail fiber store. If you love fiber, you simply must check them out. I also have a Pat Green Carder and a Pat Green Picker, both wonderful pieces of equipment. For dyes and all the stuff you need to go with it, I go to ProChem on the internet. I have never worked with llama wool, but alpaca is a wonderful fiber. My favorite sheep's wool is Merino…it spins like a dream. I caught my fiber bug at a Renaissance Faire, and I've never been the same since. Some day I hope to get into natural dyes…starting by using the goldenrod that grows in such abundance around here . I'm looking forward to getting into some fiber-talk with you, Birdi!

GeorgiaZ – did anyone take you up on your offer? If not, I think I could find a good home and use for them and would gladly pay postage. I've been studying for an exam (which BTW I took and passed – whoopee!) and have been so missing my crafting and all blogs related. I have used sweaters to felt but never suit material – I assume it felts like the sweaters? I assume that it is thinner fabric – has anyone any experience with this type wool? I would be very interested in cutting into strips and making into rugs. T
