I don't know what a "toothbrush" rug is, but there is also a rug-making technique call "shirring. Perhaps a "toothbrush" rug is a shirred rug?

I was thinking that perhaps a toothbrush is used as a hook?

I googled "toothbrush rugs" and yes, they are similar to braided rugs, but you make a needle to join the strips with out of a toothbrush.

CindyP said:Chic, just let people know to save you their old t-shirts……….you will get SOOOOOOOOO many! I told people this way back when I read this topic first……….NOW I just have to take all those bags of shirts and actually make them into strips! I could probably make a few rugs or a large one for the living room!
Thanks CindyP…what a great idea…I'll let the family know on Thursday to save all thier t-shirts and jeans for me! Wow can you imagine having to work on a rug for the living room LOL….bet it would look cute especially if it was a country/cottage styled room! Have fun with your t-shirts ;)

I used those instructions and cut up my old tees and made a toe rug for my BFF. I just gave it to her today to use under her desk at work. I thought it was pretty cool. I think I remember Suzanne saying she was on Ravelry.

To everybody…the site where I found the instructions for the "toothbrush rugs" is called Bittersweet. For everyone who loves the Foxfire series, you really should check out "Bittersweet", 'cause I know you guys are going to love it. Like "Foxfire", "Bittersweet" was a published during the '70s and early '80s and is dedicated to preserving mountain heritage. Its all about old-time country life in the Ozarks, and is full of real old-time country ways and crafts, recipes etc. Just click on the link I provided in my above post about toothbrush rugs, then have fun exploring the site. Enjoy!

I'm in the middle of making 2 blue jean rugs. One, for a friend with bad knees, is a braided rug turned on edge so that it has more give, the other is woven through rug backing. I have found a lot of useful information at the "rug maker's homestead" (do a google search).
Hope others will also find it useful!

Hi Helen, I am so glad to see the Foxfire series mentioned, I was lucky enough to inherit a set from a dear friend, and I absolutley love them, I wish I was about 40 years younger, I would try to build a cabin.

Years ago I had an aunt that made braided rugs out of bread bags….yes, those plastic bags. She put them down outside at the door and inside to put muddy boots/shoes on. Then she could just hose them off to clean them. They had livestock to feed twice a day…hence, muddy/wet boots ALL the time.

My grandmother made rugs from bread bags to go at her backdoor, too. :) They were surprisingly long-lasting! And easy to keep clean.
Mom still has one of the toothbrush "needles" she and my grandmother made and used for lacing their wool braids into rugs. They just cut off the brush part and ground the end down to make it suitable for lacing. The toothbrush already had a hole in one end to hang it with that serves to run the linen thread through that they used for lacing. I felt so good a few years ago when I put together a braided wool rug using that old lacer…
I know firsthand that if you ask friends to save old blue jeans to make a rug with, eventually you'll be covered in blue jeans. I sometimes use t-shirts to make locker-hooked or crocheted rugs but would be afraid to ask for old ones after all the jeans I got. That request was made more than 10 years ago and I still come home some days to find a bag of blue jeans left on the front porch…
