Hi, I was wondering if anyone has any experience in coloring their hot process soap with dyes made for soaping, when using the hot process method do you add the dye at the end of the cook? or at trace? and is it better to mix the liquid dye with a little almond oil to disperse it in your soap?  I had a little disaster on Saturday with a yellow liquid soap dye, when I ordered it I did not realize that it was a NEON YELLOW,surprised kind of like GLOW in the dark YELLOW, and I used it in my Lemon Poppyseed soap, well it does look a little strange at least to me, and this was a BIG batch of soap for a client, hissy-fit so now I am going to have to make more of it and she wants it YELLOW! bombany help would be appreciated!!!!!!

I am not an expert, I have never dyed any of my soaps but I would believe you would add it at the same time you would your scents, at the end of the final cook. That is when I would give it a try…happy-flower

With hot process, you color it after the cook.  Most recipes you read are CP and you add it at trace…

I've not used liquid, but the powdered I use, I mix with warmed oil (oil that I'm superfatting with after the cook).

LITTLE GOES A LONG WAYS!!!

What you could try is melt that batch down, ADD a fresh batch to it and mix together well.  (Or do 1/2 batch of each for right now). That will dilute the yellow to probably a more suitable color for you.

I ordered colorant from Brambleberry. It was blue and came in liquid form. The first time I added 1/2 tsp to my 2lb batch after it had come down in temp (due to flash point) along with my FO. It came out blue with darker blue speckles throughout.

The second time I added the same amount of colorant directly after the cook and it came out a nice even, smooth blue color. Then I added FO after it came down in temp.

Hope that helps.

Suzanne, Dede & CindyP made me do it...HAHAHAHA!

Thanks All!!!!  I am going to melt down my Neon Yellow batch tomorrow and add a new batch to it and see if I can mellow the color out.  Busy cooking today for Thanksgiving, number one son came home today for the holiday and took one look at the neon yellow soap and asked if I could market it as ALIEN soap?  laugh
