Crocheting With Other Mediums

I ran across this site yesterday 5 New Materials to Crochet, and the crocheting with wire really intrigued me.  Then Suzanne posted her Crocheted Rose this morning, it really inspired me crochet that rose with wire!

I wanted to use copper wire, but what I had was too thick.  You actually need a quite thin wire….the site says at least 22 gauge.  I'm not sure what I used was, as it was out of the package and just tossed into my jewelry making tote.  I used a small hook (1), like for using with crochet cotton.

Crocheting with wire is a bit different.  It's harder to keep tension, harder to rip out (not easy task — I end up just working with what I had, 1 little stitch wasn't going to HARM the outcome! Laugh), harder to count.  But it didn't take long to make the rose.  I added in some beads as I went, just before doing the slipstich in between petals, I pushed the loop of wire through a bead, then put the crochet hook back on and continued with the pattern.  Had I thought of that before making the turn to start the petals, I would have added beads there, but I didn't, so I just used the wire at the tail end to thread some on.  Then I just twisted the 2 pieces of wire from the rose and the stem together to attach.

That's soooo cute Cindy! How long did it take to make it?

Life is too important to be taken too seriously.

Thank you!  About an hour and a half? maybe.  Not long at all!

I'm going to try to do some other mediums, too……..I never really thought of using twine or wire before!

The wire is much more forgiving than yarn…….you can't really tell it was crocheted!

I am thinking some doilies (very basic ones) would look adorable crocheted with jute twine……very rustic!

years ago I used strips of fabric cut any width, maybe 1 inch and made rugs, baskets, placemats.  a rose would be nice out of fabric.
