I think we've gone mad! Here it is more than a week before Thanksgiving, and I am sitting in my living room surrounded by all our festive christmas decorations. We just couldn't wait to put them up! When is everyone else going to decorate? I think one of my favorite new things we did this year was using cinnamon scented pinecones on the tree. I found bags of them when I went in the Home Depot last week, so I picked up a bag. We set them all around in the tree once we had it decorated. It looks so pretty, and smells even better!

You are the second one to have mentioned that today! Amanda said earlier that they have their outside lights up already. And we don't have the garden winterized yet!

I've been making decorations, but I will not decorate until the weekend after Thanksgiving!! I must leave up fall decorations for Thanksgiving — dinner is here!
But I just hate all the work we put into decorating our house so nice for Christmas and it seems like poof! Christmas is here and gone and the decorations need to come down — well the Christmasy ones, I do leave all snowman, pinecone, greenery stuff up for the rest of the winter!

We start getting Christmas up the day after Thanksgiving. We usually leave it all up until Epiphany. Last year, dh got us a new fake tree (can't have a real one). He brought it home on Nov. 1. Ds, who was 4 at the time, was adamant we put it up RIGHT THEN! After that, I didn't do much more except stockings. I love Christmas very much, but after having the tree up that long, I was done.

I start decorating for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving, and usually take things down on New Year's Day, but I like the idea of leaving things up until Epiphany (the old "12th Night", right?), so that is what I think I'm going to do this year. I like to buy those Xman "picks"…artificial holly, pinecones, etc…and tuck them into nooks and crannies around the house, especially in the bookcases. They're cheap (around $1.00 each) and pretty. This year, I'm going to use the glittery red ones they have at Walmart. My house is already full of natural decorations (pine cones, teasel, sea shells, quartz crystals, dried pomogranets, etc), and the glittery red picks ought to make a nice counterpoint.

My wild little kitties would just tear it all down! I put up a sm tree on the buffet C'mas Eve. I'll put other stuff out they cant get to like Wreaths,C'mas Pillows, Candles,Stuffed Santas and Snowmen,Wall hangings after Thanksgiving.

In my first apartment, I had to screw the Xmas tree stand to the floor because the kitten I had at the time would get inside the tree and climb it all the way to the top. She never bothered any of the ornaments, but she used to climb up the trunk and peek out of the top.

I hear ya guys, I have a small one I put up and the cats knocked it over about 4 times last year. The first time they broke my ornaments so I made some cinnamon dough ones to put on it. The last time they knocked it down the dog ate the ornaments! Maybe I'll fiquire out how to weight it down this year.

I bought 2 of those cute little (4ft) christmastrees with lights for outside.
Put them out Sunday only to see them fly from the deck in the wind (prairies can have strong wind)
So now Jos is trying to think of an idea to NOT damage the deck but to attach the trees.

I got a great outdoor rustic santa that says "Welcome" for my birthday. It goes really well with our farm look. It is on the kitchen table right now because I haven't decided where to put it yet. We don't do a lot of Christmas decorating. We wait until Dec 1st to put up the tree.

When I was growing up, we decorated the day after Thanksgiving. I am such a Christmas nut, though, that it was never early enough for me. Once I moved out and got married, my hubby and I decided that the decorating needed to be done before Christmas. Fortunately he like it almost as much as I do!
I think I would freak out if I had a pet that knocked the tree over! Haha It would be disaster!
We haven't decorated outside yet. The bushes need to be trimmed before we can put lights on them, and the electrical outlet out front isn't working. Hopefully we will be able to get those things taken care of in the next couple of weeks and make it as festive outside as it is inside.

Not sure when we will decorate this year…. for the first time, we will not be home the Day after Thanksgiving. DD asked if we could – please – come to IL (New house, rest of family has not been there). Need to think this through…. never been in this spot before.

We are probably going to decorate as soon as there is a night my hubby isnt home….so then he cant object!! LOL He is very traditional and even when I try to convince him he just rolls his eyes at me…. So I usually have to wait. We have always had the tradition of cutting down our tree on the first weekend in december but we might do a fake tree this year due to the 2 yr old twins and the terror they rein upon our home… Would love some ideas on homestyle christmas decorating and how to keep things fresh longer!

I don't know if you can picture this, but I like to take one of those 2 gallon-size clear glass jars with the lids that Walmart carries and put a 4-wick candle in it. Then I buy a natural cedar and pine wreath and push it down on top of the jar so that it goes around the bottom on the outside. Then I put the whole thing on a plant-stand on the porch and light the candle. The jar protects the wreath from the candle, and acts as a hurricane lamp so that the candle doesnt blow out, even in strong winds. The natural candlelight looks really pretty on the porch, and the flames plus the natural evergreens tell the good fairies where to come on Xmas Eve. When I blow out the candle for the night, I put the lid on, and the jar stays free of dust and dirt inside.

Oh, that does sound pretty!!!! I have quite a few 1/2 gallon pickle jars, I could put a smaller round candle in them………then I'd have to build my own wreath to fit around the smaller jar………

That would be really nice, too, especially with the homemade wreaths!

Suzanne has a post on how to make your own candles too! Everyone would be jealous to see those lighting up the porch! Esp with the Christmas Fairies and all,hahaha!
