Gees people, I'm really starting to show my age…yep, I got a birthday coming up this week and this is the second post where I have recalled something from over twenty years ago! Anywho, when I was little, early eighties, my stepfather's mom used to make me homemade playdough…I loved it! I would love to make some for my little nephew; any of you have this most memorable recipe? I remember, Dorothy used to keep my dough in ziploc bags (yep, they had those back then) in her refridgerator. Sorry if I've put this in the wrong forum!

Hope this means I'm replying in the right forum. Here's a recipe for a soft uncooked play dough from the book 'Cheaper&Better' by Nancy Birnes.
2 cups flour 1 tsp. vinegar or 2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 cup salt Food coloring or a natural food safe coloring like maraschino cherry juice
1/2 cup water 1/4 tsp. peppermint extract or use a pk of Kool-Ade in place of extract and coloring
In large bowl mix flour and salt. No need to sift flour, just spoon into bowl.
Slowly add water and vinegar, mixing well while adding. Stir with wooden spoon until dough until mixture is stiff. Then pick it up and knead until pliable. Kids can help with this, just hand 'em a chunk. It does take quite a bit of kneading to get rid of the grainy salt feel.
Divide dough into the number of colors you want, in the amount you want. Don't offer too many choices, kids want every color in the rainbow. You'd be making playdough all day.
Take the handle of the wooden spoon, poke a hole in each hunk of dough. Add a drop of desired food color and a drop of peppermint extract, knead until color is well blended.
or make a bigger hole and sprinkle in the Kool-Ade. Knead and knead and knead to mix.
I imagine the peppermint extract acts somewhat as a preservative. Since my daughter never liked peppermint in any form we just skipped it. We also used the Kool-Ade more often then not.
I have a recipe somewhere for a cooked version, less kneading, lots more stirring. But a much smoother feel. I'll send that to you as soon as I find it. We made tons of it for our Sunday school classes but they do have to be refrigerated. Hope this is what you were looking for.

I'll give this one a try…like I said, this was twenty-odd years ago, so I don't recall a scent in my playdough; I just remember all of the fun I had! Thanks for posting this Blue . Oh and I'll be on the lookout for your other recipe. If this is the same stuff, I know lil Isaac is going to love it! Thanks! I could kiss all of you!

Here's one my SIL makes.
Chocolate-Scented Playdough
1 1/4 c. flour
1/2 c. powder cocoa
1/2 c. salt
1/2 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 c. cooking oil
1 c. boiling water
Mix flour, cocoa, salt, and cream of tartar. Add oil and water, stirring quickly. Mix well. When cool, mix with hands. Store in air tight containers.
She also makes this in case you want another idea.
Kool-Aid Finger Paint
2 c. flour
2 pkgs. unsweetened Kool-Aid
1/4 c. salt
3 c. boiling water
3 T. oil
Mix all ingredients together. Mix well and let cool before fingerpainting. This will stain the skin temporarily but they will have a blast with it! You can use different Kool-Aid flavors for different colors!

Here's a cooked one. Hope its the right one 'cause that was a good soft squishy one. It has the ingredients that I remember in it.
2 cups of flour 2TBLP vegetable oil
1 cup salt 4 tsp. cream of tartar
2 cups of water Food coloring
Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly. Clay is done when it pulls away from the sides of the pot without sticking.
A lot of stirring is involved. And when it is done it all sticks to the spoon as you stir. You have to scrape the spoon. Then, even though these directions didn't say to, you still have to knead somewhat. I imagine if you want more than one color, you cook it without the food coloring and knead it in later.
Kentucky Farm Girl: Chocolate Play Dough….YUM! Wish my kids were five again.

We had snow cream a few nights ago. It was the first time for my boys. We always had snow cream when we got a good snow growing up.
Thanks for the link Suzanne. There's a lot of neat stuff there.

I remember snow cream when I was a kid and pouring hot, slightly boiled molasses over fresh snow to make snow candy. Funny, that all stopped as soon as we got a dog!
