OfflineI would really like to learn how to make my own personal care items. That way I know exactly what's in them, for one thing. And for another, that way I don't have to depend on some Big Box store for those items.
I am very interested in herbal stuff, and wish that I knew more about what went into those sorts of products so that I could build an herb garden accordingly. I've read the posts on the Brown Sugar scrub, and it's exactly those sorts of things I'm looking for. Lotions, creams, skin tonics, shampoo, hair rinse, etc etc etc.
Anyone out there an expert, or even know where a good starting point (books, websites, etc) is?

OfflineThat's a really good thread, with lots of info. However, I was more hoping to find recipes for lotions, too. I'd love to learn how to make my own skin cream. Anyone have any experience with that?

OfflineI saw this author on a morning show who is a botonist and he sounds like he's got some real practical ideas as far as making lotions, creams and such. He mentioned other things like help for sore throat etc, but on the show I saw he focused on the 'beauty aid' things. I'm going to try to find his book at the library first.
His name is James Wong and his book is called "Grow Your Own Drugs" (no not THOSE kind of drugs!!!!!)
There's a few You Tube features out there too. I'm sorry I don't have better info, I was busy at the time so I'll have to look into it more. He seemed to make a lot of sense though and he gave a basic list of what is good to have on hand for making lotions etc, I just wish I'd paid more attention but as I said, I was busy.

OfflineBuckeyeGirl, I went to B&N today and picked up that book. It's sooooooooooooooooo cool! I have only had a chance to flip through it, but it seems to be exactly the kind of thing I'm looking for. Once I get a chance to read it, I'll let you all know more about it.
At first glance, it appears to be many easy recipes for tonics, teas, sprays, lotions, & infusions made from fairly readily-available botanicals & household items (beeswax, gelatin, alcohol, etc). I can't wait to try some!! I wouldn't feel right about posting too many of his recipes here, but for $11, I think it's a steal for the information it contains.

OfflineOh GOOD MrsFuzz! Please do let us know and I agree about limiting what you post here out of his book… I'm going to look for it too. I wonder if he'd give us permission to print one thing… I'm going to look for an address for him! Maybe he'd like to become a chicken!!!
I really felt when I saw him on that show he was a good source. He gave a basic list of what to have on hand to make simple lotions, creams and tonics etc… and they all sounded reasonable and accessible, and he talked about things we've talked about here! Things like all the chemicals and preservatives commercial products have in them… and how if we make our own in small batches, those stabilizers and preservatives aren't necessary because we're not shipping them all over or storing things in a warehouse for months on end.
James Wong has a new Grow your own drugs TV series on the BBC at the moment in the UK. I don't know if this will work for you but here's a link to the BBC 'i-player' to watch the first 2 programmes so far….

OfflineOK, I found the show. He was on the Martha Stewart show and here's a link to the article about it and it has a list to some of his basic ingredients.
btw, I won't apologize for watching Martha, lots of people love to hate her, but I admire her. Yes, she mostly has minions to do stuff and develope her crafts etc now, but that wasn't always the case… anyway, there's some things I'd do, and some I just laugh at. Enough of that though, here's the link.

I couldn't get those links to work Rose, they're "Not available in MY area" (meaning the US of course! LOL but I did see them on You tube, I'll put those links up here, but first I also found THIS at the site you gave Rose! It's the recipes he uses on the show!!! So if he posts them, they're fair game for us to go get them!!! (though not post here willy-nilly of course)

Hi All!
I have been experimenting with body care products, kind of like the mad scientist. Last week I made deodorant using bees wax, corn starch, baking soda, coconut oil. I heated the beeswax and coconut oil and added the corn starch and baking soda, then added the essential oils, using neroli, lemon grass, lavender, bergamot, and geranium. Mixed it up put it into a cleaned empty deodorant container. I have been using this for about a week, I think it works pretty well! and I like the fact that I know what's in it!! I also made some perfume out of the same essential oils, bees wax, shea butter, and petroleum jelly, heated it up then added the essential oils, put the mixure in some old cosmetic containers, it becomes hard, and then you can rub some on behind your ear or wrists. Here is a great site for making scrubs out of old lotions and shampoos.
Lots of great ideas here

OfflineI think the beeswax is just a carrier.
You can get deodorant application containers here: Deodorant Tubes at SKS and they have lots of good lip balm tubes etc there too, just have to look around.

I have had good luck with the deodorant, it seems to be working, I have not had anyone tell me I STINK! meaning my husband! The perfume is very light and does not last very long, maybe I just did not put enough essential oils in it, but I like scents that are light. The beeswax helps with emulsifying I think. I am just experimenting with these products, so just learning. I just love the fact that we can make our own products and no what's in them! I am saving up for the big soap making adventure, I know that I will have to follow all directions and can't play mad scientist.

OfflineThis is a very cool thread. I had not even given thought to making deodorant. It sometimes is a challange to find a product that is just deodorant, not an anti-perspirant. My hubby wonders about the idea that the aluminum in the anti-perspirants cause health problems, so we don't use such products. I am excited to check out the link!!
Has anyone ever made lip balm? I went to a friend's house for coffee one morning and she whipped up lip balm while I was there and gave me some. Very simple—coconut oil, bees wax and honey from her bees, and vanilla. It smells like a cookie and is a great moisturizer for your lips.
