OfflineI can remember making them years ago and it was such fun. I had also bought a taper candle mold but the candles got stuck in the mold so I put the mold in the oven at a low heat hoping to melt the wax out of the mold but to my dismay not only did the wax melt but the solder on the mold did too and the whole shebang fell apart! Needless to say that was the end of that project. That was quite a few years ago and so far I have not felt the inclination to try again. Oh well……

OfflineWe made these back in the day too. Prettiest one we made we used a red taper for the wick, with rather large pieces of cracked ice all around it in the 1/2 gallon milk carton. When we poured the melted parafin, the red wax from the taper bled into the white parafin, making the candle turn out somewhat marbled or swirled. We've never been able to get another one to do as well. One thing we've learned, don't use ice that is too finely crushed, as it will melt and you won't get the "holey" effect.

OnlineYes, I remember making these too, back in the 1970's I think. They were very pretty, especially if you used a dark color candle in the center and white wax on the outside. Fun to make! We just used ice cubes and a waxed cardboard milk carton. Thanks for the reminder!

OfflineI remember them too! I remember them being a lot of fun to make and the ideas about using a dark taper in the middle for good color combinations for holidays sounds very interesting. the red and white sound quite pepper minty! I didn't use scents much, or even at all really, back then so pepppermint or pine scents for Christmas candles really do sound good!
Thanks for bringing these up again Cassie!

OfflineIf I remember correctly, we even tried making a whipped candle with crushed ice at least once. Don't remember if that actually worked, though. But you can make an entire candle from them, if you can "pour" it quickly enough!
Hey! In the 50's and 60's we just didn't have all the craft stuff that came along later!! We used things like broken and misshapen tapers for projects like this. The only paraffin we had available was from the grocery store.
Hmmm. May have to try these again. Been saving quart half and half cartons, and will likely never make enough soap to use them all!
