OfflineI bought this vintage tablecloth at a yard sale today to make into curtains for my newish old farmhouse style kitchen. I was going to ask if anyone knows how to do this, but I don't know if I can do it. It smells exactly like my grandmother's house from when I was little and I can't bear to do anything to it that might make the smell fade! I keep smelling it and smiling all day, like some kind of freak! But, just in case the smell fades and I want to make curtains out of this, does anyone know how?

OfflineAm willing to bet that tipnut.com will have a pattern for just that sort of project. No, I don't mind looking for you, but you will enjoy looking around over there so much that you really owe yourself a look see! All sorts of projects there. Have fun!
(OK, I should probably have put one of those little devil heads there instead of a smile because tipnut is one of those places you can stay lost at for a long time…)

OfflineIs it too big to use as a curtain as one piece? I use the clip rings for my vintage cloths (napkins, tablecloths, hankies) with a dowel rod (painted black to look like the wrought iron ones), so I don't have to cut them at all in case I want to use them for something later on. I've even folded them so they're closer to the right size. I don't have traditional curtains in any of my windows as there are so many pretty vintage tablecloths and such that can be found at yard sales, thrift shops, and I can switch out my window treatments CHEAP quite often.

OfflineWhat a great idea, Cindy!
And I forgot to mention that that is a beautiful tablecloth!!!
I would caution that if you are going to use it as one piece, be careful about fading. It will fade, the amount depends on where it is hung and for how long. Still, it would be so nice to have it remain a tablecloth for later use as such.

OfflineI know, I love it and would love to keep it for a table cloth, but I also need curtains and can't find any I like, or any fabric I like either. I'm very torn. I'm also tempted to keep it in a plastic bag to preserve the scent so I can keep smelling it whenever I want! lol
I have two windows next to each other, so I need two curtains. This tablecloth even matches a small painting I have in my kitchen, with large pink, blue and yellow roses. Too perfect!

OfflineI bet the scent has to do with being line dried in the sun, flapping in the breeze. If the scent fades, I might try hanging it out for an afternoon. I love that color combination for a kitchen!
You could make some simple tab top curtains and if you need more fabric, you could pick out one of the other colors to coordinate. You could design your whole kitchen around that one piece of fabric. Many of the paint stores can come pretty close to a near perfect match, too.

OfflineMy kitchen is yellow so it already matches. That's why I'm so torn, they're perfect for it. But I like the clip on rings idea. I have some but they're the wrong color. I don't know if it's wide enough to cover both windows without cutting it, I'll have to check. There's a space about 8-10 inches between them so it adds to the width if I use one peice.
It turns out that both my grandmother and the woman who owned this tablecloth used Tide. My grandma used a dryer with Bounce sheets but I don't know about the other woman. The thing is, I use Tide when I don't make my own, and I used to use Bounce sheets a long time ago, and my linens never smelled like this. I wonder if Tide changed the scent from so long ago (30+ years). Probably. If I could get that scent, I'd start using Tide all the time and make up for my indulgence somewhere else! lol

OfflineSpray paint the clips!!!!! LOL!! I'm a person of reclaim, reimagine, redo….. If something doesn't work, make it work!
Clip the rings on a string or something tied to a couple sticks outside and start painting, you can work all the way around without having to touch or waiting for one side to dry.

OfflineI might paint those clips. I'm going to measure the width first. I have half a mind to write tide and start a petition to get the scent changed back! lol

OfflineThey probably changed it to accomodate those of us who were allergic to the old scent. Sorry!
Another possibility for your tablecloth in case it isn't big enough to span both windows properly is to use it something like a valance, centered on the middle, spanning both windows, with some sort of cheapy sheer or eyelet curtain filling in at the ends. Don't know if that makes any sense! I can picture it in my mind…maybe drawn up with cord or something to make everything the correct length. How tall are these windows?

OfflineI measured and it's actually big enough to fit! With the space between the windows, I have 4'9'' high by 5'10'' wide, and the cloth is 4'11'' wide by 6'10'' long, so hanging it lengthwise it will be big enough. I think with clip on hooks and a rod I can just hang it as is.
