Have you seen this stuff? It's a little like oilcloth, but you can write on it with chalk or chalk markers and erase it. I have seen it used for placemats, pennant style banners and other cute things. I'm can't wait to try it! Has anyone used this?

Never heard of it, but what a good idea! Does Joanne's carry it? Just might have to check it out.

Remember, if it rains on your picnic it's also raining on your garden!

I have seen instructions on how to make your own on Pinterest.

Brookdale, yes, I got mine at JoAnn's. I made a small 3x5 type gift tag yesterday. Just glued the chalkcloth onto a piece of burlap. I don't find that regular chalk works too well on it. But I have some chalk markers and they work great. I'm sold.

hugI bought 2 yards of this from Fabric.com and am making roll-up blackboards to sell at our church fair in December.  I saw it fist in a magazine (Simple Quilts and Sewing) that gave a pattern for these, but it was really very simple: just cut the blackboard fabric to the size you want (pattern has 10X 12 inches), the cut the backing fabric (I raided my stash of juvenile fabrics … I'm beyond te age when my friends are having babies so this was leftover from making baby quilts)3 inches bigger both directions (13 X 15 inches).  put the 2 wrong sides together, center and fold the backing fabric 3/4 inch, then 3/4 inch again and topstitch.  Attach a ribbon to the middle of one of the short sides and that's it.  I modified it by putting a little pocket in the bottom corner for chalk.  The pattern said to not put the fabric in the washing machine, I also found that you can't "erase" it, but it is easily cleaned with a wet cloth.  I use regular chalk and it worked well for me.  But I also followed the direction to "Cure the fabric before using.  To do so, lay a piece of chalk on it's side and rub all over the fabric.  Wipe clean."

I really love these and we are hoping they sell well.  It cost about $11/yard, but I can get 12 chalk boards out of a yard and using fabric I had and having the chalk donated, the final cost was minimal

Have fin with it.

Ruth- that sounds like a really cute idea. I may have to borrow it someday. Hope they sell well for you!

langela,

you are most welcome to try them… I got the idea from a magazine myself, so it is not original.  We are hopeful that they will sell but I won't know until December  :)   We are planning to market them as a good "car toy", something you can carry with you.
