I recently started my first rag rug with blue jean scraps and the toothbrush method.  I have a ton of old jeans I just couldn't throw away and wanted to do something with them.  I was making it too tight and have had to take it apart and am going to start all over.  I need a new rug in front of my kitchen sink and heard that this type is really sturdy so I need to get back at it.  Maybe this evening?

This is the simplest of crochet!  It's just a single crochet going around and around and around, basically like a spiral.  I don't have a beginning to the row, so there is no chaining 2 or anything.

I'm not sure what size that hook is, it doesn't say.  It's a huge plastic one.  From googling pictures, I think it's a Q.  It gives a 1" single crochet with the sheet.  The middle part is done with a smaller hook (P which would work for using T-shirt material), but that was just too hard on my hands, so I went on the search for the BIG one!

When I have it all done, I'm going to tea stain it (in a kiddie pool) to bring all the colors together into the same family.

Actually it's beyond coaster size!  My foot (8 1/2) fits in that middle, darker part.

Oh JenW, what cute..never seen there before..very nice.

Cindy your rug is sooooo homey, I started a fleece rug a while ago (OK I started it over a year ago, but I got a cow…and that is so much work LOL)

For everybody who can't crochet, I bought 3 cheap fleece blanket in colors I liked, green, red and beige.

Cut them 2.5 inch strips, sewed them together (by color of course), and braided them.

Now I'm (hand) sewing the braids together in an oval shape..but all shapes are possible.

I should finish it….now my cow is on a date, I should have enough time.

We went for a trip this weekend, 7 hour drive one way and finished stitching 2 primitive samplers.

All what it needs now…is tea stain.

I started my dining room crocheted rag rug today.  It's going to be a circle rug that's 80" across.  I'm crocheting strips of ripped up sheets (decluttering).  So far, it's 20"….only 60" more to go!!!!

I've always wanted to try making a rag rug. Maybe one of theses days I'll actually give it a try. I would love to see yours.

JenW.   I'm not sure where I heard of the toothbrush method of rag rug making, but I learned the method from YouTube videos.  They don't actually use a toothbrush on those videos, but I guess in the old days they used the handles of old toothbrushes.  They removed the brush head and formed that end into a point, then put a hole in the other end to put the rag strip thru (kind of like threading a needle).  I just use a large safety pen hooked thru the material and it works fine.  I had to take my first attempt apart and start over because I had pulled them too tight.  I've gotten another pretty good start on my rug.  Have to cut up some more jean strips.      P.S.   Love your birdnest pendants!

Well, we all know Suzanne has been working on her apron a la Great Aunt Ruby!  Well, she got me going on my apron project too!

Here's the first result!  I went for a bit of funk combining an old fashioned fabric with some more modern print on the pockets and bias tape.

This was my test run, now for more fun!!!
