Hi Marjo! Sorry, I didn't see this until today! I have only made three batches of soap so far, the first one was the very first one that Suzanne posted. I think it was called "sugar dreams" or something like that. I really liked that one - it has a little sugar in it and it's a creamy white, it's a simple soap and I didn't use any essential oils or perfumes. The second one was at the retreat and my husband liked that one a lot. I didn't like it as well because it was scented. I guess I prefer an unscented soap! The last batch was Susanne's Chocolate Spa Soap - it came out great looking but I have no idea if I like it because I gave it all away! Have you made any yet?

Crystal, thanks for the information on using coconut oil in hot process soapmaking. I've only made one batch - so far - but I did use lard, olive and coconut oil in it. It came out great. The only thing I don't like is that it's so "soft". It doesn't last very long and gets soft sitting in a soap dish. Maybe that's the nature of hand made soap? Is there a way to make it harder without sacrificing the lather?

Your calendula soap looks beautiful! They all look beautiful but I especially like the look of the calendula.

Jan what where the % of each oil?Oils have different proprieties
http://summerbeemeadow.com/content/properties-soapmaking-oils

This chart works well for hard soaps also if you run your recipe on soap calc it will show you the hardness level of your recipe

also I would like to state that even thou you can use HP soap right away it does get harder with time as the water dries out of it

Would appreciate if you could recommend a location to purchase the lye necessary for making soap. My cousin is interested. I milked one of the goat and got the milk he needed and he apparently has the other ingredients except the lye. He has tried contacting the grocery stores, farm supply, etc here in our area (Southeast Georgia) and has not been successful. He only needs a very small amount. Thanks.

I have just read a recipe for a soap made with all coconut oil - it's superfatted to counteract the drying nature of coconut oil. Has anyone tried this? The recipe is for cold process but I am wondering if you can use the crockpot method to do a hard process soap? Any thoughts?

Jan i use coconut oil in some of my recipes it adds a nice lather here in the city with the hard water it will even lather in salt water. I try to keep it under 20 % of my oils, I use it with lard and olive oil sometimes I add coco butter and/or shea butter as well depending on what I am making. I am a fan of hot process soaps thou I do make cold as well and I add about 2% more water to my recipes when Hot Processing simply because I like a creamer looking bar
