OK – I even posted about this last year during canning season, but I wanted to see if anyone else is experiencing the same.  I've had, on average, 1 – 2 jars  per canning not seal over the past year or so.   Now, I have been canning or helping my mother can for the better part of 40 years, so it's not like I am a novice.  I had never had any trouble getting jars to seal until this past year.

I decided it was the Ball lids – which is the only thing I can get in this area.  I called and e-mailed them, and their response was a nicely-stated, "You are doing something wrong."  Not happy with that answer, I decided to go online and try to find another source for lids.

I ordered bulk lids from Lehman's.  (The unfortunate thing is that I don't think they are made in America.  I hate that.)  BUT!  I have done two loads of black beans, and what do you know…all the jars sealed!

I hope to get some Tattlers soon…I just have to win the lottery first.  :-)

Any others experiencing the same?

Joann

Joann,

Several (15??) years ago, I had a lot of trouble with the Golden Harvest lids that came with the boxes of jars I bought at Big Lots.  I too had been helping with canning for years, and couldn't figure out why there would be as many as half of the jars not sealing.  I set the lids aside and used the Ball lids exclusively for several months.  Then, I was out of Ball lids, had some canning started and couldn't leave to get more lids.  I put the saved Golden Harvest lids on in the simmering water, and then just boiled them until I was ready to use them.  Don't know if the lengthened time in the water softened the seals (maybe they were old?), or what, but all them sealed.  Maybe I just got lucky.  Unsealed jars are a true frustration--hissy-fit

One of the problems that have been reported about the NEW ball lids is that they shouldn't be actually boiled, just close to it.  I too used to boil them hard too, and now use the kinder gentler "just get them good and hot" which seems to work better for me.  I don't like the new lids at all either, just for the record, but that's what is easiest to get so I deal with it.

I turn the lids top to top and put them in a bowl and pour water from the tea kettle on them. I inspect the rings just as carefully as the jar tops because I have found a rare ring that won't tighten properly. Usually I can attribute a sealing failure on small error on my part.
