This is possibly weird, but I'm so infatuated with the new platinum lids and bands!  I've been buying the platinum lids for awhile, and you always need new lids, but I've started buying some of the matching platinum bands, too, because I think they're so pretty.  And will be nicer for gift-giving.  Of course, in 10 years, the old gold ones will be back in style!  (Not that I'm throwing any of them away.  But, I've got a lot of old, banged up bands, so I need some new ones anyway.)

What next, new jar styles?  I do get bored sometimes with the jars.  I actually wish I could get some of the older styles you can't find anymore.  I have some old squarish pint jars that I think are so cool, but the new ones are all round.

Clover made me do it.

Do the platinum rings  rust?   I love the old jars too, and I pick up everyone I find at yard sales and thrift stores, and I never give one away when I share.

I can't find anything but the platinum lids, so for gift giving, I really need the rings, too….

I love the elite jar line ball has…….just don't like paying the price.  Those are saved for special projects Smile

I save all my square pint jars and old quart ones that I've acquired for dry storage…….just can't think about those ones breaking in the canner No  The square ones fit much nicer in the pantry…….

The platinum bands are all that come with any new jars you might now purchase. at least around here.  Yes, I've had to buy a bunch of jars in the last year!  Got bands coming out the wazoo because of it, and would NEVER buy any, however pretty they might be!  Same with seals – all platinum now.  It will be interesting to see where they go when all the anniversary ones are sold.

Old school here – I don't care so much what the jar looks like.  It's what's IN them that matters here.

For gifting, we used the ordinary jars, but added tissue paper squares under the bands to jazz them up.  We also have a bazillion of those hang tags, so labeled the jar using a hang tag tied on with a bit of ribbon.  The seal was labeled, too, of course, so the recipient of the jar would still know what was in it after removing the hang tag and tissue paper.  It was very simple to do, but added just a touch to make them "special" without spending nearly as much as those designer jars cost.

All to say, we plan to use the same system for gifts from now on, using appropriately colored tissue paper and ribbon for the occasion.  They looked really nice in small baskets that way.

Guess I strayed here!  Couldn't help it – talking about high fashion in canning, I pictured either how the jars are dressed or how we are for canning!

Suzanne, I found half-pint jars at Wal-Mart which are 3-1/2 inches x 3/12 inches by 2 inches high.  They are perfect for gift giving.  However, last week when I wanted more they had removed the canning supplies for the shelves.  Apparently they aren't aware that some of us can year round.  Anyway I found some at Ace Hardware.  Probably any store which handles canning supplies would have them.  Hope this helps.

Mama, we have had members here report that their WalMarts carry canning equipment year around.  They just do not do that here!  Big Lots remains our most consistent source of new jars, but they also carry them seasonally.  Even our grocery stores are hit and miss with having them.  It is a puzzle.

The up side of WalMart here selling out is that when they do, the reductions in prices are terrific, if you happen to catch it at the right time.

Some of the Wmarts around here just don't carry any canning stuff (big city?), and when they do it is only seasonal.  The Big Lots are the cheapest by far, the grocery and hardware stores here are just too high.  Some times several dollars per case.  We have a buddy that works at our local recycle center, and several times a year he will call us, we have gotten over 30 cases of jars from him.  But the last load was all old mayo and mustard jars, I don't know what I'll do with them, can't take them back, he will just call again, hee hee.

Jeanne, the old glass mayo jars are great for boiling water bath canning. As long as the canning lids and rings fit of course Sun2

Have used a few of those that way.  I tend to check them more often and use them first.  Would never put them into a pressure canner, of course.  Of course, those also make great storage jars for things other than canned items.

Back to the question about the platinum rings rusting – none of mine have been around long enough to do so, but I am certain that they will oxidize just like the other rings do.  Probably made out of a similar metal, if not exactly the same with a different finish on it.

I like having some of the new bands too – I do love the look of them. I bought several cases of platinum jars in various sizes using coupons for Ball jars that came out about this time last year. They were cheaper with the coupon than the regular Ball jars. I used to use paper type toppers but moved on to fabric circles. Then jumped to tulle – loved that change. Now I order tulle bags with drawstrings! I pop a jar in the bag, pull the ribbons and voila! I agree that the contents are the most important thing but I like matching the outside to the inside Happy Feet

for those of you who cant find canning supplies at walmart – try ordering them online or use the "site to store" option (its great – you dont pay shipping charges – i have used it many times – you just pick a walmart that is close to you and they email you when it gets there and is ready for pickup)  i'm onlline there right now and they have the jars, canning kits etc….Shimmy

A lot of retailers will do that, including Ace Hardware, and others that don't come to mind right now.  Even some grocery stores will do it.  Point being – it pays to look around to see if a retailer near you might do this!

Yep, drop ship is still possible, and like Pete mentioned, Ace Hardware is one place that will do that. I also have a small True Value nearby that carries canning stuff year round as does Southern States. Someone mentioned Tractor Supply also but I never think to check in there.

I just checked the Walmart site and those are twice the price than what I pay at my Walmart store.  Here, a case of 12 is $7 or $8.  They have the Golden Harvest brand, which I get at Big Lots in the spring for $6 I think it is, for $15.68!  Wow!!  Big, big difference!

That is why I have not used the service at Wally World.  The hardware store is cheaper than that!  But if they happen to have a specialty jar, it might be worth it.  The day I checked, they did not.

They don't all carry everything all the time, though.  The Ace near my house gets in some half gallon jars, for instance, but you can't count on them having them all year long.

Hi guys,

I was at Kmart today in Parkersburg.  They have one pint somewhat square jars with the platinum lids.  I think I paid 5.89 for four.  They carry the smaller jars at our walmart.  Good luck.

I was always taught by my mom and also Georgia to never use the mayo jars in any type of canning because of the risk of them bursting during the processing.  If you can see a seam down the side of the jar, it should not be used for canning.

Now, Georgia would always save pretty glass jars that other jams, foods came in as long as they had metal lids.  She would use these to put up jellies/jams and seal the top of the jelly with paraffin.  Then the lid to the jar was just put on top to keep the paraffin clean.  You can also put up jelly in any pretty glassware this way (i.e. stemware, glassware, decorative glassware)
