Hey Everybody,

I just posted a blog about how our family made 50 gallons of apple juice in a day with very little effort… in a washing machine! Thought it may interest some of you: http://lundkids.blogspot.com/2…..chine.html

Have a grand day! happy-flower

Okay, yes, I suppose I should have entitled it 'apple cider', but the kids keep calling it juice, as it's so sweet fresh, that it stuck. But we're going to let some harden off for a few months and see how that tastes. Mmmm! happy-flower

Thanks guys! Ya, I thought it was pretty neat! The idea originated from a Backwoods home article tho, so we can't take the inventing credit for it! ;)

I was wondering how you came up with the idea but even if you didn't think of it, you still executed it and that's just so cool!

Be careful not to cork the jugs tight as they will burst when the cider starts to ferment.

Yes, we have to burp the jars that don't have airlocks regularly. We've experienced those cider bursts before!

That's very slick. For the cider you're not fermenting, how do you process it so it keeps?  Do you have to pasteurize it?  And where did you get the jugs?  You've got me curious.

When I was a kid in high school one of the kids brough cider in on Friday for a haloween party on Monday. Our teacher put it in the closet and on Monday morning we had a large brown puddle on the floor in the classroom. That same kid when we were in high school filled his thermos with cider each morning all winter . The longer winter lasted the less he cared.  ;)

MaryMooCow… sounds neat. The pictures were blocked for me to see them. Photo bucket is a blocked site from the school district server that I have internet through. We are big apple cider fans around here. I wish that we could make our own as well. Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I'm sure pasteurizing would slow down/possibly stop the fermentation. Never tried it tho. Everything gets drunk up so fast around here! :) The jugs are recycled wine jars from a friend.

Cathy, we just posted a youtube video with more detail. Maybe that would work for you:  http://lundkids.blogspot.com/2…..apple.html

Great job, we live in WNY apple country but don't have a spare washer. Don't know if they'd let us pick up the windfalls here anyway. I think they hire people for that.

My question is "How did you get all the laundry goop out of the hose?'' You know, all that grey gunky stuff that gets up in there and you don't know about it until a $40.00 repair bill later. That stuff.

And I thought that in the country, all spare washers went on to become Herrick Kimball's WizBang chicken pluckers. I wonder if you could use one washer for both purposes. Maybe with a lot of bleach in between?

Progress might have been all right once, but it has gone on too long.  Ogden Nash
