Oh yes, you can definitely use the burner on a gas grill on your patio.  Never doubt that many here have used that option in the middle of the summer heat!  It just needs to be able to adjust it fairly well and most newer gas grills with those burners are good enough for that.

It just needs to get hot enough to boil water, and then adjust down low enough to keep it at a simmer.

There are options for canning on a smooth top stove.  My pressure canner is safe to use on a smooth top stove.  You just need to be sure that the bottom of the pot has a smooth surface.  Most of the water bath canners I have seen have ridges on the bottom.  Never slide the pot across the surface of the stove. Weight is an issue, so I would suggest a smaller sized canner, not one the size of your kitchen table.  wink  I have a 23 qt pressure canner from walmart and I have used it on a smooth top stove.  If you do use a grill burner, just be careful that your pot isn't so heavy that it tips the entire grill over.

Re the ceramic stovetop: I've researched it recently myself. The ceramic stovetops are not safe for canning because the glass is only tempered to high heat over the heating element. As most canners are much wider than the heating element it spreads the heat over an area of glass that isn't capable of handling the heat. You may get lucky with it, but as replacing the glass or my stove isn't in the budget, I opted for a single burner. They come in all price ranges, but for canning it's best to have a good one so the temp is reliable, and I'm VERY happy with the Waring brand (1300 wat) that I ended up with. They sell for $50 at Bed, bath & Beyond. They often have sales- I got an online code for 20% off & free shipping. Here is the link for the model I use: http://www.bedbathandbeyond.co…..U=15862700 . I'd love to see more recipes for pressure canning.  My aunt has canned most of their food (in Alaska) for most of her adult life, but we don't live anywhere near her so I've been doing mostly trial and error. I've been making water bath stuff for years, but only one season with a pressure canner. I have been making mostly soups (cold pack) and dog food (sometimes on purpose, others were failed soup recipes!). Good luck!

An electric stove is slow to respond to heat changes so for canning a gas fueled stove is a much better option. A 12 quart canner filler with jars will weigh 30 to 40 pounds . Be certain that your table and table top burner are strong enough to handle that kind of aa load.

THAT is an awesome option Sheri!  I know others have mentioned getting a burner like that, but this is a timely reminder, thank you.

Is it easy enough to get to the adjustment knob when your canner is on the burner?  It looks like it may overhang the dial quite a bit.

We used the gas burner all summer long for both WB and PC with no problems being able to reach the controls.  And in the heat of summer it is nice to take the whole set ip out doors under the shade canopy and can.

Work like you don't need the money, love like you've never been hurt and dance like you do when no one is watching.

Sorry for the delay in responding, we have had an extremely bad family emergency here. My cousin has been diagnosed with a fast growing malignant brain tumor, the same kind that Ted Kennedy had. ANY AND ALL prayers will be appreciated!

I'm really glad to know that I have options for canning other than my ceramic stove. When things settle down, I will be able to research my options. Thanks, everyone!

Lana, That kind of news is always devastating to learn. We will of course keep your cousin in mind when we pray.

On a lighter note often when people remodel their kitchens they remove the cook top from the counter and throw it away. A four burner gas cook top could be mounted in a plywood base and converted to LPG and used on a picnic table.
