All the talk about "canning" lettuce, I thought, I need a FoodSaver.  Went to the thrift store today and scored one for $5 (the bags cost more)!!!  I found it over with the computer scanners and printers. LOL  Just need a hose and the lid attachment.  Now that I have all this equipment I had to have after the retreat, I need to clean my basement up and get some shelving to store everything!  Oh, and BanjoBetsy, I bought a pot!

What a great deal!

(I've really gotta start going to thrift stores…)

I was at a garage sale the other day and they had an commerical size pot for $1.00.  Some how it jump in my car.  I used it for a BWB.  Didn't have a lid but the large lid from my skillet did the trick.

I love thrift stores and yard sales!  love love love em!  Problem is, I live in a rural, frugal, smart area… not so many cool things anymore.  We need more city people who don't know what the heck this weird pot is that has clamps and gauges on the lid, or why anyone would want a grain mill or what is this box that says 'foodsaver' on it!

For me the problem is that I work full time…can't beat the bargain hunters by being there early during work days!  no

We go to the city and shop the garage sales every once in a while. Great bargains. I love to find someone who is selling "Great Aunt Nellie's" stuff. They have no idea what they are selling or what it is worth. If they are that ignorant I am not going to tell them how wonderful a find it is for me!

OK, since we are sharing our thrift store deals, last Sunday my daughter & I had driven over 2 hours to get a bunch of FREE guineas.  On the way back, we stopped at the Goodwill in Tappahannock, VA.  Get this…I found a Squeezo Food Mill!  I knew it was worth alot more than the $6.99 on the tag but wasn't exactly sure how much they go for.  Came home and looked it up at Lehman's…$199.95 and I bought it for $6.99.  Yep, that's why I love thrift stores!  (Plus, I love finding things I will actually USE.)

Oh, one other thing.  We don't have Tractor Supply stores close to where I live but I found 2 during my travels to get the guineas.  They had canning lids on clearance.  I found the manager and asked if he could do any better on the price and told him if he gave me a good deal then I would buy ALL he had.  I ended up getting wide mouth and regular mouth lids for $0.50 box and then got rings & lids for $1.00 box.  Somehow managed to get the other store to give me the same price (although she was reluctant)…having my receipt from the previous store helped to convince her!

So, to my boyfriend that complained about me driving over 2 hours to get guineas, well, I more than made up for the gas I spent with a DAY OF DEALS!  (cause I didn't even get around to telling you about the $3 bagful of handtools we got at a yard sale!)

I love scoring deals.  Last weekend when we were at our daughter's we went to a food cooperative that sells all kinds of food stuff in bulk.  Well, I had scored some vanilla beans earlier and needed some more.  Now my hubby's thinking is that I could have gotten it here at home.  When I told him that I got 8 beans (an ounce) for $12.00 and here I would have to pay $4.50 per bean he never said another word.

I always like to buy locally if I can because I don't like to give my cc number over the phone and I guess I am a little bit impatient in the fact that I want it NOW.  I have been trying to find clear gel here in Wichita.  You would think that a town this size someone would carry it.  Most of them tried to sell me sure jell.  Anyway I remember that a lot of you all purchase things like that at Amish run stores and knowing that there are a lot in some of the nearby towns I ask my son whos makes delivers if he would keep his eye out for it.  Well, he told me that a store about 30 miles .59.  They also sell a lot of other bulk food that I may want in the future.  Has anyone used or heard of powdered vanilla?

mamajhk, I've used powdered vanilla … utterly perfect if you want a white cake or frosting that hasn't turned cream because of the deep colored vanilla extract or you have a recipe where 1 tsp of liquid anything will upset the recipe balance.  I would love to buy it in bulk … there are no Amish communities here in CA … as the cost of packaged powdered vanilla is dear.  Good flavor.  Not as good as scraped vanilla beans but serves a purpose.

Matter of fact, I would love to discover these thrift shop and garage sale finds below the $10 mark you gals have lucked into!  There are too many EBayers and canny entrepreneurs in my suburban area convinced that anything close to 50 years on this planet is worth a fortune and price accordingly.  Oddly, they don't seem to value commentary from someone of 50+ years … lacking the ability to talk back is their prime virtue of vintage.

My envy and applause to the sweet scores.

Thanks Ruthmarie.  I knew someone here would know about it.

I don't always score those kind of deals.  Some people overprice their stuff at garage sales and I will walk away from it.

I bought powdered vanilla at Whole Foods. I've used it in my coffee and in my yogurt. I think it would also be good in powdered mixes you make yourself, like hot cocoa mixes, cake mixes, brownie or cookie mixes for gift giving, etc.

I (sorta) have a farm in Africa.

Estate sales are another good place to find "Great Aunt Martha's" things at great prices… or my favorite, an Auction!  Love me a good Auction!

It seems here (Michigan) the Good Wills have decided their stuff is worth more than the neighboring Salvation Army or other thrift stores.  But, on the last Saturday of the month, everything in the store is half price.  That is usually a mob scene and you had better get there early, but there have been some good deals picked up by me and my daughter on Last Saturday!
