Has anyone tried making soda pop jelly using root beer as the pop?  If you did, how did it turn out?

I have made soda pop jelly using some leftover orange soda.  It turned out okay (in the fact that is gelled like it should) but it very sweet (almost too sweet).

you can buy root beer extract which would make the process much easier.

I can't help but wonder if you have made so many fine fruit jellies that you are resorting to this. How about koolaid jelly? Pectin is rather costly.

happy-flowerMy neighbor's daughter has made jelly using Kool-Aid, I have not tasted it, She says her kids really like it. She did mention that she got the directions from the Kool-Aid website. If you should try it. please let us know the results and what flavors you made.

Thanks for the help.  I just wanted to try something different for some Christmas gifts and root beer soda pop jelly sounded like it would definitely be unique & different.  The person I know who made it used powered sure gel and it was more like syrup.  They really liked it b/c they put it on ice cream, waffles, etc.                  chef

Pappy's has a recipe for Sassafras Jelly using their concentrate:

http://www.sassafrastea.com/home/recipes.php

It's about 7 down on the page.  I haven't tried it, but it would certainly taste like root beer, without the carbonation.

Mary, the recipe I have uses powdered sure jell.  I usually cook my jellies about 30 seconds longer than the recommended time.  Most of the time it works.  I have had a few times that they wouldn't jell for anything.
