Is there some way to check the water level without removing the top pans to look?  Am thinking that this is a fairly closed system, so there really should be very little water loss, but…

There is a danger of boiling dry which can warp the bottom pan. The suggested help is to put marbles in the bottom pan which will rattle/chatter if the water gets low. I prefer SEEing if it's ok LOL. So I make sure I have a 'landing pad' ready and I lift off the two top sections. If water needs added I sit the top sections on the 'pad' and add boiling water to the bottom pan. Pretty quick process actually.

I have one of those Pampered Chef "rattlers" that you put in the pans to make noise when they get low.  I think I'll put that in AND check myself LOL.  I like having a back up plan!  I am loving all this info and saving it so I'll have it ready when mine gets here.  My friend called this morning and said her blackberries were ready.  I am so excited about this because we love blackberry jelly but don't like having ANY seeds in it.  It's always a pain to get all the seeds out!

I've had to add water twice while doing this bucket of apricots.  (It wasn't a big 5-gallon bucket's worth–maybe 3 gallons.)  I'm still doing it, on the fifth (!) quart now–I think it will probably make six quarts.  I've refilled the water twice.  I just check it periodically–it's really no trouble to take the first two sections off.  I load the water in a half-gallon pitcher and pour it in then put the top two sections back.

Clover made me do it.

Here's a link to a free steam juicer recipe book from Mehu-Liisa. I have it printed out and I keep it in my SJ box for reference. It's much more informative than the book that came with my SJ.

Yeah, you are correct, using the word 'book' doesn't describe it. Pamphlet, or maybe handout would be a better description for most of them LOL. That Mehu-Liisa freebie is great to have – worth the printer ink for sure.

Dede,

A little late in saying thanks for the heads up Dede. But, I went and ordered this stainless steel steam juicer and, what a great price! yes

It's finely arrived and I am going to go to a u-pik nearby and get some strawberries for the first run with it. Any suggestions for the first time?

Thanks ever so much for posting the link. happy-flower

Phyllis, good for you! For strawberries, if you think you will use the remaining pulp for fruit leather or whatever, then hull the berries when you wash them. Otherwise don't bother! Having said that, after spending time hulling and then looking at the remains of them after steaming ….. lol wasted my time hulling them after all. I KNOW there's something worth using there, but sure looks terrible bug-eyed

By the way! I want to be sure that I have not misled anyone – I noted in the blog post on FBR that the steam juicer in the picture on that post is NOT mine, but belongs to my friend Dean in TX – who graciously allowed me to use that pic because HIS SJ and kitchen are so much more attractve than mine. I have the Back to Basics aluminum steamer. Works perfectly fine too, not as prettiful happy-flower

I really considering getting one of these steam juicers.  My first thought is can you can the juice to use later for jelly or do you have to make the jelly right away?

Marionberries are right around the corner and I would love to make jelly without straining and straining and straining!  happy-feet

That whole ' making jelly in the dead of winter ' part sounds great Dede… being able to heat the kitchen then, instead of the summer, with the simmering and canning etc sounds like a winner!  Of course, the steamer makes heat too, but you can't have everything!  We're busy enough with other things this time of year though.

I'm not likely to get one of these, I also wouldn't use it enough, but I can really appreciate the usefulness.  If I lived where I had a 'canning buddy' again, it's the sort of thing that would really be worth having to share between two families.  I know that sort of thing is fraught with danger in case of disagreement, but when it works, it's a thing of beauty!

I'm going to make some jelly then can the rest of the juice for later so I can decide as needed what I want–sauces, glazes, syrups, or just juice for baking or even just for drinking (though I'm not a big juice drinker–if I had company that wanted juice, though, it would be nice to say–oh, I have some juice, hang on! and pop some juice out of a jar!).

What a great idea with the meat……shredded chicken for bbq or adding to meal type of canning!
