What has happened to the text here?  Also noted no text on some other topics.  Did the gremlins get in the system?!poke

Yeah, looks funny with blank boxes. Maybe the original poster can write it again…

I don't know what the originator had to share with us but IMHO we all need a memory place, somewhere we can find peace and quiet in our busy lives, a way to recharge or physical batteries as it were.  Our ancestors had their memory places along with quiet times in prayer.  It is my intention to try to find that place at least daily and lose some of the stress of daily life.

I don't know what happened yesterday but I will try to post my request one more time!

My dad (who was 93) passed away a week ago this past Sunday. He lived in a little cottage apartment in my back yard so I am missing him terribly and know that I will for some time to come. (If yours is still living, please spend a lot of quality time with them because when they leave you just never are prepared).

so, I bought these two rose bushes…….one for Daddy and one for my godfather who died 11 years ago this August.  I can't plant them where I intended and the only other spot with good sun and dirt is on the back side of the house. (Which faces Daddy's little cottage). There are grape vine trellises and blueberry bushes back there too but plenty of room for the roses.

I just need ideas of how to make it a special place. I am not that creative. I thought about a wooden bench to sit and reflect, etc… Any ideas or suggestions that don't cost a fortune ………even down to how to outline the area etc would be appreciated.

I just want a special place to sit and remember my dad and godfather.

I am sorry for your loss, a memory place is a very good idea.  What I think would be great is the roses or flowers with fragrences, a bench and a water feature.  I hope whatever you choose brings you comfort.

I found a page on a site I go to once in a while

 go to thriftyfun.com

use their "search" box and type in …planting a memorial garden

Hope this can ignite some ideas sun

I tried to give a direct link but it wouldn't take you there.

JeannieB, thank you for your good wishes, and your good advice. A water feature is a must I think. Daddy always tinkered with building things from wood so I will want a wooden bench. I have a swing he made for me years ……and I'm talking 17 years……ago that is still going strong but it's hanging in my courtyard from beams concreted into the ground so I can't use that one.

Miss Judy, I did as you suggested and visited that site and it had great suggestions! Thank you for taking the time to find that for me. One thing it had was little statues and I hadn't even thought of that.

So far what I have come up with is the rose bushes….some fragrant and beautiful herbs and perennials, a waterfall feature, a nice wooden bench, and I am going to try to find a statue of a little girl with her daddy. I am sure someone makes them somewhere. This gives me a good start.

Now I just have to design the layout and try to make it come together. If anyone has any other ideas please post them.

Thanks!

I'm very sorry for your loss.  Glad to hear you got to spend a lot of time with your father in his last days.  I'm sure that time was just as special for him too.  hug

My MIL has a similar spot in her backyard where she goes to think and relax.  My FIL planted an ornamental cherry tree for a little shade and defined the space with a stand-alone corner of split-rail fencing.  There's a bench along the back, two small raised bed planting squares at the ends of the fencing (one on each side), a little bubbly stream that runs beside it (a water feature of some sort is so relaxing), the area is set with flagstones with pebbles filling the cracks, fabric mulch underneath to prevent weeds.  There is a little table in front of the bench if she wants to take her coffee out there with her.  She has set out lots of little garden knick knacks like hanging lanterns off the corner post, odds and ends of things that she likes.  It's a really nice spot to sit.  Just a few ideas.  Hope that helps.
