Yum….butternut squash!  My Aunt Darlene used to grow these, they are delicious!  Do you know how well they do from seed?

Haven't grown any myself, but they should do just fine.  They are just a big old vine of a squash plant!  Give them lots of room and let them go.

We are going to try growing several vines this year on upright tomato cages that we built a few years ago from hog wire.  Our experimental tomato patch didn't do well last year, so that bed may become a vine bed instead, if we can train the vines up onto those cages.

Pete,

My two year old nephew could help you with that!  Listen to this:  Last year, when he really began toddling, he grew his own tomato patch from seeds!  Honest Injun!  Yep, little cherry tomatoes; he went out everyday and watered the seeds and finally…they grew!  He was so pleased!  This year, maybe he can help me grow some butternut squash….how do you prepare them?

Thank ya,

Hollie

I just stick the seeds in the ground, but you can start them inside in grow cups.

Hollie, I am interpreting your question of (how do you prepare them) as how to cook the butternut squash. I fix them the same as a sweet potatoe casserole or souffle with a brown sugar, butter, pecan topping.Hungry

Butternut squash are easy to grow from seed.  The vine sprawls but not as much as some pumpkin.  Just be sure to wait till they're truly ready before picking.

We always grew them when I was a kid so I knew to wait till the stem dried out and let go of the squash but the first year DH grew them for me (he didn't know what they were but he's always willing) he thoughtfully picked them and brought them up to the house.  Before they were ripe for picking…  I could salvage some but they wouldn't keep all winter as they will when picked at the right time.
