I'm afraid that after a week and a half of straight rain, my first challenge is he weeds.

I am hoping that some of my seeds are coming up.  I'll be sure to let you know thoughhole

We had a whole summer like that a few years ago. It was so bad that I got no tomatoes and had to go buy them to can.  It prompted us now to grow many different types of them…early, late, eating, paste, and one that does very well in cool climate and is even heirloom.  I understand your challenges.  When you depend on your garden to eat all year, you hold your breath and wait even more.  I know I do.  Good luck with your seeds. We had that happen some here as well and had to replant some of the navy beans. The weeds are never ending and seem to lovethe rain.

We had a good soaking rain last week.  I look out there now and in the melon/squash patch where I haven't mulched yet, I see TONS of little-bitty weeds coming up…grass of some sort?  I'm trying to remember what popped up there last year.  Anyhow, they're coming up really thick and I've got my work cut out for me.  Hopefully the dirt will dry out a little bit, long enough for me to get after them with the hoe.  I am still paying the price for not mulching/keeping up after the weeds better last year.  Some of those weed seeds can stay dormant for 8 years or more!  surprised

Ladies, do you have any old newspapers?  If you do….put them down between the rows (wet them a bit as you lay them to hold them in place).  They will block weeds until you can get mulch down over the top of them….and they will become compost as they decompose!  I put them down heavy when I do my flower beds & usually don't have any weed problems for a couple of years….8-12 sheets thick.  In a veggie garden no more than 3 sheets should be plenty and will be gone by the end of the season or nearly so.

You don't have to hoe or pull weeds first unless the weeds are really tall, just cover them with the newspapers.  Throw some dirt or rocks on top to hold them & then mulch with whatever you have….hay, straw, grass clippings.

If I learned something today, the day wasn't a waste!

I use the newspapers too  and cardboard. I just toss a bit of garden soil on to to hold them in place in the wind.  I add mulch when I can get it.
