I have used epsom salts and bananas for my roses for years.  They love the magnesium from the salts and potassium from the bananas.  In thae spring I put bananas (peel and all) into the blender with enough water to get the whole mix going, pour it into a bucket and add about 1 tablespoon epsom salts and pour around the roses.  Also, use the same mixture in the hole when planting.

Yeah, I forgot about the banana milkshakes.  I used them for the roses in Tx.  I'm glad you reminded me.  I know the roses love that!

farmgrammy, I wish I could catch him to get a shot!  He comes in the middle of the night and I found another bed he dug around in yesterday!  I had one last year too, but he became road kill!  The buzzards took care of him! happy-flower

Bananas, epson salts (if needed…get a soil test), coffee grounds…all the things ya'al have mentioned are good to great…but try adding a few alfalfa pellets to your mixes.  I think you will be surprised at the happy change.  You can get a box of rabbit food in some stores that is the alfalfa pellets…so you aren't investing a large amount of money or have a big batch of them hanging around…just to see how they do.

I just went looking for sources of potassium other than bananas. it seems that potato skins would work as well as bananas.

Ross:  Thanks for the tip about potato skins, most go in the composter but can definitely "feed" some to the roses.

gakaren:  Alfalfa pellets at the pet store will be easy enough to pick up.  On yesterday's post I was picturing 50 pound bags of pellets!  (I have a very active imagination).

MaryB:  Don't despair, spring is just around the corner; after all, the groundhog promised only 6 more weeks of winter and that was 17 days ago! lol.

I really hate to do this to ya'al….but I picked 4 daffs & 1 white iris while ago & brought them in.  Got them in a bud vase on the dining room table! cool  It is an old variety of iris that is really, really early.  But then they don't die all the way off during the winter down here either.  I have a big bud on my deep purple one too! happy-butterfly

happy-flowerRoss, I make manure tea for my plants, would the addition of the peels be a good addition, or would it be to much? Also, do I dig them in or just leave them on top to decompose?

                   Thank you.

Today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday.

Joell, I'm not Ross, but I would dig them in if it is very warm outside.  Less things for critters to get hold of!

Manure tea is great!

We just did something that we shouldn't have!  We moved those 2 big knock out roses.  They were just way to big for the places I had planted them.  I had not seen them get that big in other people's yards but mine did!  It is really late to be doing this, should have done it last fall but the temps dropped to freezing before we got to it.  They had started to put out shots but we moved them anyway.  I put a bunch of alfalfa pellets in the holes before placing the roses & then more on top of the ground after we had filled in with dirt…then watered in WELL!  They now have unlimited space to spread…they are out by the road, 0.10 mi. from the house!

If you dig in the potato peels, you are likely to have potatoes sprouting up willy nilly in your garden…. some people wouldn't mind, but it would drive others crazy I imagine. :)

I put the bananas in the blender for that reason too, to keep the critters out, plus it goes straight to watering the roses.  I guess the potatoe peels would be the same.
