Growing Your Own Dishcloths (no need to knit!)

I got my Tipnut.com Daily Tip today……..  Grow your own dishcloth!  It's growing the luffa gourd right from seed in the garden, then harvesting the "dishcloth" out of it in the fall.  They keep sweet and clean, dirt and grease do not penetrate.  Small ones can be used for bath sponges, medium ones for dishcloths and large ones for rags.

I think Sheryl talked about growing luffa before, but I didn't understand what she was talking about.  Now I do!

They last quite a while, but then again, what does THAT mean, right?  Kinda depends on how much you use them, but they certainly don't disintegrate right away.

They are supposed to be quite easy to grow.  The ones I've seen growing are more or less the size of butternut squashes – and about that variable in size.  We did plant one one year and it was forgotten through a dry spell, so we never got any fruit.  We just have such limited space for things that vine.

This sounds like a great year to try again!

I tried growing these once. They are really neat and do last a long time. I had trouble like Pete and it was dry and I only got a few small ones. But I have seen them grown bigger than mine. I have seen them cut in slices with homemade soap poured over them so you have your own loofah sponge with soap.

Be sure to double check the species of the plant.  What many of us are accustomed to having in the bath may or may not be this "dishrag" variety.  On the other hand, it would still be good, wouldn't it??

I have tried to grow luffahs for years, to go with my homemade soap, but no luck. Its a really long, warm season plant and just doesn't do well for me here. I will continue to try, but just not this year. I have way too many other new things to get going.

I want large ones. You can slice the dried innards and make welcome mats or outdoor rugs out of them too. I have read that you can fill the dried insides with homemade soap, just pour it in while it is still liquid, let it harden and slice it.

Anyway, they would be great to have if I could only get them to produce. Maybe I will try again next year, starting them way early, underlights indoors.
