My uncle and I are going to attempt to do this way of raising tomatoes this year with 5 gallon buckets and lids and instructions we found via one of my chicken websites! I was just wondering if anyone else has tried this and the results? 
I was hoping to do regular tomato and cherry tomatoes and also strawberries!
PLus that would prevent my chickens from getting into them…hopefully…they are smart little birds!

I did both cherry and regular tomatoes this way last year, Heather……..only I used regular hanging baskets with coconut fiber lining……… it worked well, but doing it my way, I had to keep them watered all the time!! I'm going to mulch the tops of them this year to help keep the moisture in. But the harvest was good!

Heather, I have planted tomatoes in buckets and large pots for several years with some sucess. Also I have planted lettuce the same way, but they they seem to need more water than plants in the ground. Keep the chickens out but do use a little poop for fertilizer. Good luck!!

I grow my cherry tomatoes in large pots with great results. Are you talking about hanging..like upside down? Always thought about trying it,but was afraid that after a good thunderstorm , I'd find all my tomatoes scattered across the deck.

Sometimes,I live in my own little world, but it's okay because they know me here.

My husband made a hole in the bottom of a 5 gallon bucket and planted a tomato plant in it and hung it from the garage roof. He put the lid on the bucket and the plant did pretty well. I think if it had had a little more care it would have done better.

 I tried growing the upside down hanging tomato plants…I grew some beautiful plants, but the wind snapped them off at the base. It was heartbreaking! Try to grow them in an area that will be sheltered from the wind – and anyone accidentally bumping into them.

mine were the ones hanging upside down…….the vines on mine were very strong…….i had a hard time getting them out of the pot at the end of the season!

So for the most part, ya'll agree this is a good way to do it? I'm really excited to do it this way but i want results! Last year, I was so excited my uncle planted some cherry tomatoes for me and then it only produced one tomato and I hurridly ate it off the vine! 
I'm just making sure that it will produce a bunch of tomatoes because I love to eat them! (And my chickens like them as treats every now and then)

My vines were very strong too…but so is the Texas wind!

That's true…….we don't have as strong of wind here, even though we're right off Lake Michigan…….

I have wanted to do that for years and seriously considered it this year but had no place to hang them. I want to build a hanging platform off the deck for them next year and try a few that way.
