I told a friend from South Paris, Maine that I would try to assist her in finding some affordable, real (unprocessed, additive-free) food. She said that it seems to be hard to find. I said to her that sometimes people have extra that they would gladly give away just so it isn't wasted, and if she asked around, she might find that she can pick extra fruit or veggies in someone's garden.

Now, I imagine that the season is done there like it is here, but I was wondering if anyone might live close by there and have extras each year. She would be looking for real farm grown meats, fruits, veggies, and possibly grains for flour. I don't know what milk laws are like there…but that would help as well. She does have some eggs that she could barter with.

I told her about FreeCycle too. It can be a great place to try.

If you don't have anything, but are willing to teach her some sourcing skills to find foods inexpensively or free, I know that that would be appreciated too and get her started. If you are interested, I would pass along your contact information and it would be up to her to contact you.

She said that she would love to have a self-sufficient farm, but that is just not happening right now.

Thank you for considering. hug

You're right, the season is pretty much over with here in Maine, but some farmer's markets are open all winter with root crops, meat, milk, etc. Has she checked out the farmers mkts in her area? I'm sure there must be some.

And yes, freecycle is another option. Great stuff can be found there. Craig'slist sometimes has produce on there too.

And, an option for next year would be FarmShare. It's an income based program run by the state, you have to apply and pick a participating farmer and then you can get $50 worth of free produce during the summer. Tell your friend to go to Maine.gov and look around for the link to the farmshare program.

Hope some of this helps.

Remember, if it rains on your picnic it's also raining on your garden!

Thanks, I passed those ideas on.
