Houseplant Problem

Houseplant problem, here. I'm not sure if this the right forum for it. I rescued a Norfolk Pine ( house pine) from a garbage can at work. It is still in the original pot and soil which could be part of the problem. Anyway, it is growing fuzz on the top of the soil. Some sort of mold. I put charcoal, regular grilling charcoal, on top of the soil but it isn't doing much. I know it should be activated charcoal but this was all I had.

I checked on some of  the gardening websites and their answer to everything was sprays, sprays and more chemical sprays. I'd like to avoid that if I could. I've kept this plant alive for two whole months which is a record for me and a non-herbal houseplant. If there are any houseplant people with any advice I'd be very grateful.

Since it is a freebie and not out of my hard earned pay, I'd take it out of the pot, knock off the soil from the roots, and repot it in clean soil.  I'd water it carefully, keep it in an east (preferably) or south facing window, feed it lightly with fish emulsion, and keep my fingers crossed.  I'd also make a point of turning a quarter turn each week.

They like bright light, relatively warm temps, high humidity but dry feet.  Keep it watered but don't keep it wet.
