Admin Note:  moved from Anyone Have Any Unusual Repurposed Gardening Pots?

I just read that your mums died…is that normal? Not saying against you!!happy-flower I am just curious I planted some in some pots last fall, well when it got cold they all died, so I thought. Well I am not a cold weathered type, I actually hate going out when it is below 60. So I just put them under the porch and pulled them back out this summer to plant some herbs in it…they were green! And now have blooms on them. I have a hard time growing anything around here and they came back! Was this just luck or did I do something that helped them survive the winter? By the way they have 2" of snow on them when I moved them under the porch.

Mums die every year, then come back the next year.  I planted mine throughout the yard.  They naturally die (I don't do anything extra to/for them for the winter), then begin growing back in the spring.  By fall, they're all bloomed out and pretty!

Well that is cool. I really thought they were a "one shot and done". Well they sit at the corner of my garden, I didn't really have any where else to put them so they pretty it up while I am waiting for my veggies to come up!

Don't forget to trim back your mums, it will make them fuller and not leggy!

Mums are about the toughest most dependable flowers you can grow. I have some that have bloomed every year for nearly forty years. The only care they get is a little fertilizer once in a while and cutting away last year's dead growth..

Of course, not all mums that you get are as hardy as others.  Many are sold each year just to be pretty fall color.  But, it never hurts to plant them anyway.  At least some of them will survive and thrive.  When they do, it is well worth the effort.

My Dad used to take the mower and mow them off about Memorial Day or the first part of June. The first time he did it Mom about had a heart attack!  But…they grew back full like a bushel basket! They were beautiful.happy-flower

I have heard or read that if you keep mums trimmed back til about the Fourth of July they wil bloom in the fall.  Didn't get it done to mine and some of them are blooming.

As an addition to the previous two posts—here in the mid-south we are advised to "pinch back" our mums by about one third two times during the summer.  Once around Memorial Day (this weekend—alert, alert!) and then around the Fourth of July.  This helps the plants to be bushier and gives more fall blooms.    happy-flower

All of this depends on whether you want long stems or short stems.

My Peonies are coming in now. I think that they are the most boistrious of all the flowers I grow.

I dearly love peonies, but just can't grow them in this heat!

This is great information – mine are starting to bloom, so I will cut them back.  I was surprised that they came back so full and hardy!

I enjoyed my mums for a very, very, very short time last fall.  Then my chickens enjoyed them way too much.  Who knew that chickens like to eat mums?  I didn't! laugh

I didn't either but that is good to know now! I was thinking about planting them around my coop!! Scratch that idea…I think they look even better now around my garden!
