I have these Peony plants, but they look more like a small tree limb with 'things' sprouting out at one end.  Is that the roots or the top?  You'd think the directions would say which end is up..cheesh!  poke

I do too!  They have sentimental value to me since my mom always had them.  :)

You know they didnt say what to do with them come fall, though, they said only how pretty the leaves turn, but do I cut them back?

Yeah just cut the stalks off when they turn dry and brown, Sometimes you find seed heads on the plants and they will make new plants that will bloom in three or four years. never as pretty as the parent but never terrible.

I had a huge peony plant when I first moved into my house.  I decided to split it and try and replant it.  All went well.  I never cut it back in the fall.  Now, in Ohio, Spring is here and I will cut the old sprigs as already new sprouts are coming up.  Interestingly, the original plant was a light pink.  When I split it, I have 2 'offspring' that are vibrant red and the original is still pink.

Oh Mary, you will love Peonys!  I had some at my old house! They were split from very mature plants from my mom's yard.  Her plants are huge!

Split them?  Ok, I will get back to you on that when it's time. lol My mom had them too, when I was growing up, so they are special to me too.  :)  Yep, I got mine in the ground, and my sunflowers, hollyhocks and dahlias!  I am so excited.  I still have more to plant.  Now if it doesnt snow or freeze on us again.  It sleeted again today!  Cheesh!
