OK, I know a lot of people probably have been slammed with winter weather, so I don't want to rub it in, but here in Western WV, we've had crazy *warm* weather.  It was mid 60's two days ago!

Well, I planted my garlic in November/ December (don't remember exactly when but after Thanksgiving- forgot to write it in my garden book somehow) and covered it with straw for the winter same as I always do.  But when I was out there today playing with my low tunnel for the kale, I noticed a *lot* of the garlic is actually coming up!

What should I do?  I don't want it to all get ruined, but I don't have any other ideas other than cover it even more with straw to protect the shoots- but I don't really know if that will help.  Any ideas out there?  Any experience with this?  I'm going to be seriously bummed if I don't have garlic and scapes come spring/summer!   Should I plan on replanting the entire bed in the spring?

I predict it'll be fine.  A little more straw may be good, but either way it'll just send up more shoots if it freezes again.  That's been my experience anyway, though every case is likely different.

I planted mine in early November and it started coming up immediately (I'm near the coast of VA).  I never even covered it.  Our low for the winter is 24, and it's just fine so far.  I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks!  I'm just used to colder winters in the mountains, and my garlic never came up before the spring, so I wasn't sure if this was OK or not.  It's good to put my mind at rest.  Thanks!

Mountainkat, I'm in western WV too and my garlic usually comes up over the winter at some point.  Usually the deer keep it nipped back until we put our electric fence up in the spring.  It should be fine.  Mine is a few inches above the mulch now.
