Cindy that is exactly what I needed! Thanks! Husband is good at doing what I need I just have to be very specific or he thinks too much. He wants to plan things forever, then buy all the supplies, then think and plan it some more, maybe research it a while and talk to everyone he knows about the best way to go about it, then start the project. And then I will come in and finish it. Because he is the first to admit that he NEVER finished anything!
I could fill a whole thread with unfinished projects he has all the supplies for and has started but never finished.
So the more I have planned, the better off I am.

OfflineI came across Simple, Green, Frugal Co-op Blog. Today's post was interplanting and successive planting. As they harvest, they fill the area with compost and plant another type of vegetable. And within the post was a link to one of the writer's post on composting……she describes in detail and simple terms how to create a large (can be scaled back to small) composting system so you will always have all the compost you need for continuing your garden soil.

The snow needs to leave so we can be outside getting on with the gardening! The boards will be here next weekend for the chicken house, so then we will busy building ourselves. And there will be lots of board left, so I'm going to build more garden boxes!!

Cindy, you could find a feed store selling chicks right now and raise them in your bathroom. By the time the coop is done you'd be ready to go! Or, were you going to incubate and hatch your own? I'm old and can't always remember.
no, not hatching own!! I was scared to do the chick thing, but……. ummm, haven't told john this yet, but a few chicks are going to be hopping my car as well! hehehe!

OfflineYou go girl!
Here is the set-up I have for Thelma and Louise. Bottom of tub is covered with cloth to keep clean. (yeah, right) Chicks in a rabbit cage in the bathtub, cage sitting on an upside down recycling bin. This elevates the cage so it is easier to clean and play with the chicks. Heat lamp with 250 watt red bulb hanging from the shower rod. This works well because at first they need to stay at 90 to 95 degrees. Weekly you decrease the temp by five degrees until they are at 65 degrees. The spring tension rod is easy to raise or lower. I have an oven thermometer in the bottom of the cage for monitoring temps. The chicks I got were trained to use the rabbit tube waterer so I just stuck with that. It is a lot easier to keep clean and they can't spill it. They have a chick feeder with starter food. I went to PetSmart and bought puppy training pads and I line the bottom of the cage with a fresh one daily and add some wood shavings for bedding. It really makes clean up easy. I also bought a small wooden perch for the cage. They are still too little to roost but I have been putting them on it so they get used to it. Prepare for wood shavings all over. They love to test their wings.
Disclaimer: I am no expert. These are the first two baby chicks I have ever had.

OfflineI have a couple suggestions if I remember what I have heard or read. Use cardboard in the bottom of the beds or many layers of black & white newspapers. Don't use color printing , something about the color ink not being good for plants or you when eating the veggies. Also I would just experiment with the number of plants in the boxes, some do well when planted close, some esp root veggies need more space. Also use some of the chicken poop, but not too much. I am inspired by Nursemary's garden, I need to get moving, I ordered my pelleted lettuce seeds and last weekend was beautiful, but Hubby is recovering from his 5th sinus surgery and this weekend calls for rain. Maybe I need to take a couple of vacation days—--

Thursday is my first day off and I get to put my garden into place. The beds are almost finished. 4 are done. Will be time to fill and plant. Im going to actively look for something to work as a cistern. It would fit perfectly on the corner of the house right at the garden. Then back to the sewing room.

OfflineI see a lot of members did the raised beds this year. Besides the LOVELY picture from Mary(?), how did everyone do? I got the original book several years ago and used the method this year – it was my first garden – so by no means use me as a testimonial. I used the soil mix Mel recommends and I think it was pretty "hot" and I didn't water like I should have, so I think I have ID'd my issues. I'm interested in anyone else who tried it stories of accomplishment or not. I think I am going to go ahead and try another one next year in addition to the one I have – I had soil mix left over, so I'm going to cut it with some just plain dirt and hopefully reduce some of the "hotness". There is a website from Australia called Down—to—Earth blogspot and they have bunches of raised beds. They used concrete blocks to make theirs and I am going to use that method for next year's bed. Looking for any additional advice or commiserating from others experienced. Tammy

OfflineOne thing I did read is to NOT use treated wood. I used cedar in mine and it was pretty pricey. That's why I'm going with the concrete blocks. The other thing I am thinking about the concrete blocks is planting flowers like marigold (don't they keep rabbits away?) or maybe an herb or two in the holes of the blocks (because they are laid on their sides with the holes up/down).
