This year I planted three tomato seedlings and two bell peppers in the same plot I used last year. I now have 8 tomato plants and still have but two peppers. I moved another found seedling today. The part that amazes me is how they all seem to play catch-up by mid August. I am going to have far more tomatoes than I will need even if I can some.

Naah, you can never have too many tomatoes! There's tomato juice, stewed tomatoes, spag sauce, pizza sauce, salsa, tomato preserves, ketchup, enchilada sauce, etc..etc…etc…

I planted some white currant tomatoes about 4 years ago–they are still coming up everywhere!!  They get huge, sprawling and climbing the chicken yard fence.  The tomatoes are tiny and very sweet, but hard to pick–you have to clip the bunches off the plant with scissors–if you don't, they spoil almost before you get them back to the house.

I am thinking of dehydrating some–I think you could use them in place of raisins!!

I just haven't been the same since that house fell on my sister.

I agree with Judy! Last year I canned over 50 pounds of tomatoes, and thought, "I'll have tomatoes till the 2nd coming." NOPE….amazing how fast they were gone. :)

I agree, no such thing as too many tomatoes.  We try to go into the winter with at least 100 quarts (there's only the two of us).  We may have some left for the next year, but since we must rely on the market for our tomatoes, we feel safer having extras.

My consumption of tomatoes depends upon the kind of meals I fix. Some recipes call for a lot of tomatoes and some recipes call for just a touch of tomato.

I have had a few volunteers that really surprised me! I have a small gourd pumpkin that started growing in the middle of my corn. I have never grown pumpkin and the only time it is around my house is Halloween. But it all goes in to the compost and I guess one little guy made it through the winter and has now made a BUNCH of babies!

The other one is cantaloupe..i can't get rid of it!

I have volunteer squash … yeah, the original Sorcerer's Apprentice … growing in the yard.  TWO places in the yard.  Best guess is the dog, who loves the cast outs in the compost, munched his prize around the yard.  However, I can't determine what this volunteer is!  It's producing baby fruit right now that look like acorn squash but is developing a decidedly bush-shaped plant.  I grew both acorn and bush butternut last year rather close to each other, so am now wondering if this volunteer is a, ah, crossing of the two.  Hmmm.  Time will tell.

Normally I wrench out volunteers, but DH has a silly soft spot for green surprises … he's promising [again] to pull all volunteers out of the compost next year since I [grumbling] had to start a new pile thanks to the forest of sunflowers growing out of the bins this year.  The tiny finches hanging upside down, wrestling seeds out of the droopy heads, make him laugh.

Last year I had a volunteer tomato, but none in that location this year, alas. Almost every year I get root parsley and some mustard greens. Haven't planted parsley for years because of this!

We had potatoes sprouting up in the old patch. I guess we missed some last year. Also, two sunflowers have grown in different parts of the garden. We didn't have them last year. I think a bird or chipmunk has been planting bird seed for us.

I had a ton of volunteer lettuce this year…although when you let some go to seed I guess that's what happens.  also have 2 squash that I didn't plant, but the grown squash look like they may have came from the neighbor via the compost pile and surprise surprise I just found a pumpkin growing…at least I think its a pumpkin–maybe even a white pumpkin…halloween compost???? although i don't remember having a white pumpkin??  I hope it doesn't rot or get some nasty worm or that yucky white fungus it would be way cool to have our own volunteer pumpkin this year…yippee
