You all may have seen this already, but I was fascinated to watch Alton Brown make a homemade dehydrator using a box fan, air conditioning filters and bungee cords. He did a couple other variations, one using his oven, reptile heat lamp and a battery operated fan. This guy has a great show. Have any of you made homemade dehydrators?

Yes, my husband and I have made the one with the box fan and it worked like a charm! It was so easy to make and use.

Great idea, going to see if I can make one of these, getting tired of the dog skipping out on me every time I go out to check on the tomatoes drying in the sun!  (Neighbor hates dogs!)

Thank's for the info.  sueksnuggle

Kellytorrey,

Can you tell me a little more about it? What have you dehydrated in it and how long did it take?

We used air filters for furnaces that we found at home depot and so far I've only dried the herbs from my herb garden with it and some hot peppers that we turned into a dried mixed pepper powder. The herbs came out great, they still had good color and were very crispy and crumbled easily. The peppers took quite a bit longer and required a couple flips so they dried evenly on both sides. The ones that we were going to turn into powder were cut in half and seeded and the rest we dried whole. The whole ones took awhile longer to dry. On the whole, it's not a hard way to dry things and you're house smells great while you're doing it. We haven't tried anything wetter than peppers so far, if you do the tomatoes please let us know how it comes out!  pawprint
