OfflineIt's a cold, rainy day…perfect for working from home and doing some baking (rather than sleeping in). I'm doing more Grandmother bread and BOTH ruthmarie's and brook dale's banana breads! My Internet has been frizzing in and out

OfflineLove the smell of cinnamon rolls! It's a tradition in our household for daddy to make them for Christmas morning. Our one dd has been talking about it all year. I think since dh was gone for the last two, it's made those things he does extra special to us all.
I got up early and mixed up oatmeal scotties so I'll be baking them this evening.

OfflineI baked two loaves of bread using kefir, started yesterday, Had to let if sit for 24 hours. It is very yummy, a little like sourdough bread. I also baked a large batch of buttery crackers using kefir instead of buttermilk, my almost 3 year old granddaughter said: "O Nannee you are make me cookies today" The first batch out of the oven was consumed by GD, my wonderful husband and one year old grandson. Tomorrow I will bake cookies and a cake.

OfflineMy sister and I made needham candy today. We get together every year at holiday time and make it.
Not really "baking" I guess…
I'll post the recipe if anyone is interested. It is also called potato candy, made with coconut and conf. sugar.

OfflineHaha! We used to make that all the time for our town's "Potato Festival"!! Our 4H club used to have a booth selling the stuff. Fun memories. The recipes people came up with for potato items, some better than others let me tell you!
Maybe we never raised enough potatoes around here to rival the potato production of Maine, but we have a sandy soil just here that potatoes loved and the farmers here had some good contracts with Lays and other big chip companies. I remember our family gleaning the fields after the machinery and the pickers raced through the fields in the fall. We always got at least 100 lbs, sometimes more to store in our cellar, can and freeze.
I still always buy as many local potatoes as I can every fall. So delicious when compared to the stored and shipped potatoes in grocery stores!

OfflineI'm trying to get my Hannukah and Xmas gifts for faraway friends in the mail this week, so tonight I'm making "Chocolate Crack"–saltines with a layer of toffee on top, then a layer of dark chocolate. Second attempt at toffee; I tried a recipe with vague directions yesterday, and the toffee never really set up. Tastes great, but has the consistency of taffy, not toffee.

OfflineBrookdale,
I'd love for you to post the potato candy recipe you use. We also made a potato candy, but it was filled with peanut butter, not coconut. I might make both versions and take to work. One of the younger folk told me yesterday that she just loves talking to "old people" because she learns how to "survive". I think that candy is an example of making good with what you have. And no, I wasn't the least bit insulted by the "old people" comment.

When I was a young girl in southeast Ohio I picked up potatoes for farmers who sold to Conns Potato Chip Company. Now that was a dirty hot backbreaking job!
