OfflineI live not too far from an Amish community in Ohio. Middlefield is the name of the town, and there's hitching posts to tie the horse and buggies to behind most city blocks etc. Thing is, I haven't been able to find any info about there being one there, it's not far, but far enough that just running there and asking around and searching isn't a very good option! The Amish do use the internet, in libraries and such, don't kid yourself, but not all of these places actually put the info out where it's easy for us "English" to find.
I figure if I'm having trouble, others are too, so if you know of a good bulk food place wherever you are lets try to get the info out to each other!

OfflineMay I make a suggestion?
Many Amish bulk food stores get their wares from a company called "Dutch Valley", which also has a website http://www.dutchvalleyfoods.com/
I suggest searching Dutch Valley's vendor list…you might get lucky.

OfflineWell, that's not quite workable, because the vendor list goes the other way really… but I will try contacting them to see if there's a store in Middlefield that they supply. Worth a shot so thanks Erzulie! This helps a lot!
OK, egg on MY face! I've looked before, I swear I have!! I just now did a google search on "bulk" + "Middlefield" and came up with two names!
Fig Tree Bulk Foods on E. High Street
and
B & R Bulk Foods on Nauvoo Rd
Doh!
I guess I should have checked again before I posted this, but on the other hand, maybe it will help others anyway.

We visit the Amish bulk store in Ashery ohio at least twice a year, they also have a website, not sure of the exact name but I am sure it is easy to find. We have been buying from Amish stores for over 30 years and cannot bring myself to pay the prices for spices and many of the speciality flours etc that I see in the super markets. Even if you have to travel a bit to get there, you will save a lot in the long run. Kidron Ohio and Mt. Hope have many of the bulk stores as well, plus Lehmans Hardware, for those of you that have been there, you know to leave plenty of time to go through the store, they also have a wondeful website.

OfflineWell, the thing of it is, there are LOTS of bulk stores around here, and they're not hard to find. Most of them are Amish owned, and all I have to do to track one down is ask at one of the other ones, or at one of Amish fabric stores, or at one of their variety stores, or one of their thrift shops…you get the idea. I don't mean to sound snotty…that's just how they seem to do it around here…word-of-mouth, no advertising.

OfflineBG…there's a store called End of Commons General Store not sure what all they have. It's not an Amish store but many Amish buy there. It's 6 mi.east of Middlefield. The phone # is 440-693-4295
A place that has canning supplies is Mel's Shoes and More…phone # is 440-632-5815
Another bulk food place is Nauvoo Family mkt…ph# 440 632-5584
I had looked these places up on the web when my son lived in northern Ohio. However we didn't make it that far north…he took us to places around Ashland and Kidron. So I don't know what these stores are like but….you could call them and ask.

OfflineJoJo.. you are in my neck of the woods.. Mt. Hope Health Food Store is my absolute favorite Amish/Mennonite Bulk Store. I have gone there for over 30 years, for all my bulk baking needs, their meats and cheeses are the best prices around. Their health food supplements are great prices, better then what I can pay here in Medina County. They are friendly and will go out of their way to please. Mrs. Yoders Kitchen is just behind, eats are great.
The Ashery Bulk Store also on rte 241 has quite an assortment of bulk. In the last couple years they have expanded their space, accomodating bus loads from Cleveland area now. It gets extremely crowded there at times. I only go there if Mt. Hope Health Food Store is out of something. Their prices tend to be higher on some items.
There is also a bulk store owned and managed by Mennonites just east of Westfield, on old Greenwich Rd. Acme Food Market. They grow much of their produce they sell through the summer, including fruits. They have bakery and some bulk baking needs.
I don't go to Berlin much because of the droves of people who visit there, but they also have bulk stores.
On rtes 77 & 39 you have Troyers Country Market. They carry a bit of everything including bulk. Fun place to go.
Another I recently visited was in Baltic, Baltic Mills.
In Smithsville, next to The Barn Restaurant, I have gone to The Oak Cupboard. This is my stop when I know I can't travel down to Mt. Hope. Another emergency stop when time is limited is in Ashland at The Food Dock. They both are small and prices tend to be higher.

OfflineWell, I'm glad you posted the question, BG, before looking it up, because I've been searching for bulk wheat for quite awhile and there are some great links here! (we recently moved to western WV so I'm trying to re-establish all my food sources)
Thanks, all! it sounds like I might want to make a pilgrimage into Amish country sometime this spring!

OfflineRoss I am totally laughing out loud here. Yes there are many definitions of bulk. haaaa
I can guarantee you at Mt. Hope Health Food Store/Bulk you can buy a few ounces to 5 or 10 pound bags of flour. If they are out on the shelf and they have it in stock, they will bag whatever up for you. When our children come home from NC and NYC, this is a number one place they want to go to. They love that they can buy dried herbs, teas in bulk, and very reasonablly at that. They will accomodate you with a big smile while doing so…they aim to please. :)
JoJo we will have to meet for lunch sometime when the weather breaks.
