Bulk Food Stores!

I spent my Saturday at the Walker Mountain Amish Community, thanks to finding out the information on this thread. The bulk food store listed was the real thing and I spent way too long there. Got to meet the owners and resisted their homemade ice cream this cold January day. I doubt I will be able to resist on my next visit, and there will be another visit! The store, Nature's Way Country Market is outside of Pearisburg, VA, about an hour south of where I live in southern West Virginia. We also set out in search of the dry goods store, Mountain View Country store, and found some great items there as well. I look forward to returning when the growing season is full blown mode. I bought some steel cut oats so I can make the recipe LisaAJB shared last week. I managed to resist the 25 (or was it 50?) pound bag of rolled oats for $15, since I am the only one who eats hot oatmeal. Now if they would only make themselves into cookies, hubby would eat oatmeal all day!

Y'all be well,

Billie

The best place that I know to go to for bulk foods around here (SE Kansas) is Food 4 Less in Joplin. That's where I get my 50 lbs bags of wheat flour, pinto beans, and rice. I would like a place that offers more in terms of bulk, though, because the rest of their bulk supplies seem to cater to family reunions (i.e. bulk pie fillings, gravies, stews, pickles, condiments, brownies). Anybody in Kansas know any place else?

I know that there are Amish around here because we see their carriages occasionally in Fort Scott, but I have only found furniture stores up near KC. I saw some places in Yoder, KS, but I didn't see any bulk food stores…it seems more touristy.

If you live in a county with a diverse ethnic population then the local grocery stores will supply the foods that are in demand. We have pinto beans in 25 pound bags , six kinds of rice in large bags, Some stores have excellant sale prices on unbleached all purpose flour several times a year. Spices are sold in large jars and any of the wholesale restrurant suppliers will also be happy to have your money .

Charchar, what type of bulk food are you looking for?  I found a place in Newton that has some bulk items.  That is were I found Cleargel.   The name of the store is Meridian Grocery.  It is runs by some Mennonite ladies.  There is also a food cooperative in Topeka that has some bulk food items.  I found vanilla beans there and cinnamon sticks as well as a few other spices.

Just curious as to how far in SE Kansas you are located?  I am in Wichita.

A friend of mine is going to take vacation very soon, and we will load coolers in the car, and with a "fist full of dollars" head for Amish country. We plan stops in Mt. Hope and Kidron–I could spend a week and a small fortune at Lehman's Hardware alone, I love that place!. We will of course dine at Mrs. Yoders Kitchen in Mt Hope as well. I am so excited!!

I pan to replenish and replace a lot of my spices and stock up on bulk food items at Ashery's–they are also on line now as well, another fabulous place to visit.

Hey mamajhk (mind if I just call you 'Mama', lol),

We are in Fort Scott, so Wichita is almost 3 hours away, and Newton is a full three hours away. Thank you, though :(

I love to cook and bake preferably from all-natural ingredients (or as much as possible), so I'm looking for a place where I can buy all my flour (wheat and all-purpose), granulated, brown and powdered sugars, cornmeal, baking powder, spices, nuts and whole grains, large cheeses, large pkgs o' butter, shortening, and maybe some eggs, milk, fruit and meat if they're that good.  Basically, I want to be able to stock up my pantry with bulk buys that (besides being cheaper) allow me to throw together most any kind of meal from scratch.

Seems pretty demanding, I know. Wal*Mart would work just fine except that their quality is not the greatest with so many products, and at least in our location, the Wal*Mart doesn't sell a lot of bulk foods. We're trying to find a butcher who sells beef, goat and chicken locally, and I need to find a local egg producer. Wal*Mart's 5 dozen box full of tiny eggs that are half the size of a normal healthy chicken egg just don't work for me. Additionally, I have learned how those poor chickens live out their lives, and I would much rather buy from someone who gives them a home, not a cage to live in for the rest of their lives.

Sorry for the rant!  :)

It's okay charchar to call me mama.  We are all here to share ideas, experiences and help each other any way we can.

Joell, have a great fun time at Lehman's, The Ashery, Mrs. Yoders Kitchen and Mt. Hope Bulk Health Food Store . Not sure how long it has been since you were at Lehman's Hardware in Kidron, they have done a few changes there. It is one of our favorite places to get lost in as well.

Have you ever been in the little store just south of the auction barn on Kidron Rd, just south of Lehman's? It has some interesting things in there, way in the back of the store they use to have bulk there, when our kids were small they use to like to go there to find things most other stores didn't carry and liked eat in the basement, they have a tiny diner there.  snuggle

Thank you Dee, I know I will have a great time, I can never leave Lehman"s with out bring something home, even if it is just a cookie cutter. I have not been there for about 3 years. I will let you know what goodies I bring home.

               Thank you,

                       Jo  butterfly

PS–I meant to tell you, I am going to try your recipe for Irish Soda Bread that you have posted on your website, it looks deliciuos!
