Where can I get them?  Hubby picked up a bottle of vodka and 2 "jars" of whole beans this weekend. Well, there are only 2 beans per jar!!  And that we over $12!!    Any advice?   I'm planning on making homemade extract for my mother in law. I think she'll love it!

Thanks,

beth

Beth, ack, that's too expensive!  You can find cheaper vanilla beans online.  Bulkfoods.com is one place.  Also they are on ebay.  Check around and compare current prices.  Usually, the more you buy, the cheaper they are.  Remember that vanilla stays good for years, so it's worth it for the price to make a lot and get the beans cheaper.

I was wondering if it needs to be expensive vodka or will the cheap stuff work just as well.

If I'm going to give a whole big bottle as a gift, I'll use a nice shiny bottle of Smirnoff's.  Otherwise, you can get bigger, cheaper bottles of vodka at Sam's if you're dividing it up into your own bottles.

Warning on the Smirnoff's!  Make sure they take off that "safety cap" thingy at the store!  Or is there a special trick to it?  DH had one heck of a time.

Also, I picked the Smirnoff's because of the clear bottle. I think it's neat to see the beans! :)

Dollar genral also has cute little bottles clear and decorated if you wish to divide the vanilla.

I bought vanilla beans from a seller on eBay, and I'm really impressed with them. I asked questions about which beans to use to make the vanilla, and they responded with a lot of good information. Their seller name is “vanillaproducts” – they aren't the only sellers on eBay, but they have a really fresh product at a really good price. You can even buy an assortment of several different kinds of beans if you want to see the differences between them. Here's a current listing for their 30-bean assortment. 30 beans for $12.49 + shipping is the best price I found, and the quality is exceptional.

I bought my beans from them as well. They are excellent and the shipping was fast. They even sent me small 'freebie' pack of beans in my order. The beans were pliable and made wonderful extract.

Every room in my house smelled like vanilla when they arrived.

FYI, I edited Kathy's post to change the long link to a tiny url link.  Sometimes, a long link will break the forum in some browsers (make the forum posts run over into the sidebar).

If you're posting a long link, here's how you shorten it–go to tinyurl.com.  Paste in the long link and it will automatically give you a short link.  It's really cool!

You are so computer savvy, Suzanne! I guess you'd have to be to have such a great organized blog. I just do'nt run across blogs like yours everday! You make it so nice for everyone. For example, when I can just click on Forum and new posts I have'nt read are marked for me….I just think that's so cool!Cool Thank You for all you do for us.

Thanks, Suzanne, I didn't know how to do that. I'll have to bookmark this so I can refer to it next time I want to do it.

If you have a Whole Foods market near you they sell them in bulk.  They are about $75.00 per pound.  I bought a quarter pound and got about 26 big beautiful beans.  They are the bourbon vanilla beans from Madagasgar.  I am an instant gratification type and waiting for an online order just wouldn't do.

Here is a link to a picture of my finished product.

For those of you that don't have a Whole Foods Market in the neighborhood (the nearest Whole Foods Market is 128 miles from me) here's a link to the online seller's 1 pound bag of Grade A Gourmet Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla beans. They sell them for $49.50 per pound which is about 130 beans – I don't know how you would use that many unless you were going into mass production.  You don't have to wait long for your gratification. I ordered the beans and paid for them one day, and they were in my hands two days later. For $30.00 per pound? I can wait a day or two.
