OfflineMy father in-law has a chestnut tree on one of his properties. I would love to roast some. I know nothing about them and have never even eaten one. Could someone give me some info on them? Do you pick them off the tree or wait for them to fall? How do you roast, ect, ect, ect… I am lost. Thank you so much!

OfflineShannan, chestnuts can be picked off the tree if the burrs are opened or you can wait until they fall, but beware critters love them also like squirrels and chipmonks.
First dry for a short time like a week in a dry place.
To Roast: cut the blunt end off, put in a pan (we always used a cast iron skillet) put the chestnuts in the pan in one layer. Cook on medium heat for about 20 minutes turning to prevent burning. Remove from heat, crack, remove shells and skins, eat or use in chestnut cornbread dressing.
The other way is to put a the same only put the pan in the over for about 20 minutes on 350`. This works well also. Enjoy!
I have been known to freeze after roasting for later use, however they lose lots of the flavor.
